I'm working up to looking at doing a major freshen up of the '90 V8.
I'm pretty sure the PS pump is on it's way out as in the cold couple of days this week there has been a bit of a whine from the engine bay that disappears after about a minute driving. Couple this with what some may diagnose as a very minor rear main seal leak I'm thinking that the PS is losing fluid and it is manifesting itself as the RMS leak. (I have read that this is a common misdiagnosis of a rear main leak.)
Its it 180k km, and from all accounts its about time for a few things for a bit of peace of mind for (hopefully) another 150k of trouble free running.
So...... since the intake manifolds need to come off for the power steering I'm also thinking of doing other common failure items at the same time that while the manifold is off is good to do.
Drive belt inc pulleys and tensioner (no records on when this was done so I'm presuming it hasn't been)
Valve cover gaskets (don't appear to be leaking)
Fuel pressure sensor (no issues at the moment)
PCV valve and hoses (ditto)
VVT Solenoid O-ring (ditto)
Bear in mind I haven't got in there and had a really good look around yet, and it is not dropping oil and there are no fault codes etc on the vida/dice (All systems green).
I'd like to get your thoughts on doing the above as preventative maintenance as opposed to if it aint broke don't fix it... :)
Also I'd like to get your thoughts on doing this myself as I' thinking that this work done even at places like Berry's etc is going to be pricey even if I supply the parts.
I've worked on cars before and am pretty common sense when it comes to this sort of stuff. I also have access to a hoist and a fully kitted workshop thanks to my brother being the senior teacher at a tech studies section local secondary college that has the aforementioned workshop that he works on his own cars. (albeit building up valiant utes and drag cars.) so he is pretty good on the spanners albeit self taught! What sort of time frames am I looking at? I'm guessing a full weekend worth of work allowing for unforseens on the way...
