Tassie6er Hey Ash, the rear bar is from a late 240 gl - 1990 - I'm not sure the size - handling was surprisingly neutral, so you are right in terms of a smaller bar but bigger issue was getting traction was the bigger problem.
AshDVS Smaller rear bar will help with your rear traction issues, without inducing too much understeer. Ignoring your spring rates for a moment... For somewhere tight (like Baskerville), 23/19 might work well. Of course, a suitable tyre is important too and being mindful of not going too high in spring rate will help the car squat on low speed/hard acceleration, tight corner exit.
Tassie6er Ash, good advice. I’ve got two sets of rear springs and a spare 19 m bar, so I’ll have a play.
AshDVS No worries. On your next outing, make a change and report back - happy to help you quantify it all too. If you dont have my email address already, drop me a PM and I'll shoot it across. I (if you want to) can bounce around a few things with you and see if you can get it improving on each outing.
peterwgpa Love to see your in car footage posted as we are intending heading down to run in September and interested to see what it looks like from inside car
Tassie6er @peterwgpa - great stuff - I've got a 635 CSI BMW Original Telle replica - so we should have some fun!
Tassie6er So what better way to celebrate those that fought for our freedom, than fitting an LSD to the Sports Biscuit - it's a 3.91 to 1, so I'll also be putting in an overdrive gearbox at some point soon. So here are a couple of pic's. Plus, here is the replacement diff - it has a Dina that I picked up on ebay and had fitted to a spare housing I had by a local workshop. The first pic shows how to tell if you have an LSD (other than jacking it up) - the ribbed sections are the housing of the LSD and the second picture is of it painted before fitting. Unfortunately I'll have to fit the dust plates back because the act as a backing plate for the handbrake. The final picture is of the springs I have. As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, the rear is sitting too high and tends to lift a wheel at speed around bends. The yellow one is a Kings Standard spring - the ones in the centre are standard Volvo 244 springs and the ones on the end are for a 242. Of interest, the diameter of the kings spring is about 2 mm more than the standard spring, which is about 1 mm wider than the GT spring. The height on the king and standard spring unloaded are the same, but I suspect because of the additional width on the kings, this means it sits higher - anyhow I'll keep you posted @AshDVS
Tassie6er @GingerNinja Sorry I didn't reply to your comment - they run things at Baskerville at least once a month - next time I'm going I'll PM you - come along at least for a look. Two Volvo's at the track and they'll start to worry!
Major Ledfoot Tassie6er;135341 wroteTwo Volvo's at the track and they'll start to worry! Then they'll be in a bloody panic when I finally get Clyde the 142 finished and bring him along.... Do you need a General Competition (or whatever they call it these days) license for these days?
Tassie6er That would be chaos - if you enter regularity you will need a Level 2 Speed licence - which is just filling out a form. If you want to race, you'll need a race licence. Hoping Clyde can joins us!
Vee_Que Sorry to say. They are not an lsd. But a g80 locker, which will disengage above 40kmh with the flyweights. They are a snow traction diff. The ribs are just the speed sensor holes. You need a real lsd like an eaton.
Tassie6er So the uncomfortable truth is that I do have a G80 locker - From what I can gather, these lock the rear at low speed and then go free when you get a bit of momentum up. Great for snow or mud at low speed and then free at speed, so ideal for a 4x4 or cars that live in such conditions, but no good for a club car... Thanks to @Vee_Que for pointing out the error of my ways in such a tactful way and then PMing me some details on what to look for. I'll bolt the original diff back in today and start saving my pennies!
volvodriverman There's a way to grind down or weld up the fly weights so as to remove the limitation.
Vee_Que volvodriverman;135516 wroteThere's a way to grind down or weld up the fly weights so as to remove the limitation. Yes. But it has proven to explode in the past and a normal locker is $300.
jamesinc @Tassie6er I have a 244 I take to the snow regularly and would be interested in putting a G80 in it if you're selling!
