Hi there all, this is my first new thread on Ozvolvo although I've been floating around for a few months. I acquired a 1988 Silver 240gl with b230f, lh2.2 and AW70 transmission as my first car late last year and so far I am in love with it, a great car for cruising around in comfort and old school style. My father and I have gone through the car getting it basically sorted doing all the tune up stuff and at the moment it runs like a clock. I do however want to swap a new camshaft in for a bit more fun when overtaking and more general excitement when driving. I acquired both an A and K camshaft off some helpful fellers here so now it comes down to a few decisions:
*Would it be unwise to swap the camshaft with my father? We have a decently eqquiped garage, dad has a good mechanical knowledge and I feel capable of doing it if I familiarise myself comepletely with the procedure, although my father is weary of something going wrong and Mr piston becoming close friends with Mr valve or the brittle hardened steel camshaft snapping in half. . Would rent a shim kit or go round to wreckers collecting shims untill I feel I have enough to do a proper valve adjustment. Otherwise I will take it to GLT at Cleveland and get the experts to do the swap, but I am 21 and have small pockets
*A or K camshaft? I like the idea of more smiles per dollar and enjoy putting my foot down, although I don't wring my motors neck all the time, I do treat it with respect. I make moderate use of the transmission kickdown and shift it manually when I feel so inclined. I also like the idea of a nice grumpy idle. How driveable would a K cam be at lowish (below 30-40% throttle) in 50 km/h traffic and going up hills at lowish revs? I never tow anything or get stuck in extremely heavy traffic, but I do go up some nice big hills sometimes, during which I whack the tranny into 2nd .
*What would I have to do to the idle control and ignition timing etc to get said K cam to run nicely. I also am considering purchasing (more money....) or modifying a stock volvo cam gear for more timing, how necessary would this be if I am running a K cam with the auto box? I do plan on doing the accumulator mod somewhere along the line, not that it's too related to this.
*I don't plan on getting a full exhaust upgrade though some time down the track I will delete my front or rear muffler and add a high flow cat, whatever option gives a nice note but does not sound like some ricer milo tin on a Mitsubishi mirage. I have removed the hot air intake from my airbox and currently have the hole capped off but will rig up ram air with some hoses from the hardware store sometime soon.
All while keeping in mind I'm a young feller and this is a $2000 dollar car.
Any advice or suggestions at all are greatly appreciated, please shoot!
Cheers, Jonathon
