There were repeated inquiries into the $1000 tax-free threshold, by both brands of government - they kept finding the same thing: the cost of collecting the revenue will significantly exceed the revenue collected.

And then along came Joe, and Hockenomics... The logic is that it will put Aussie retailers on a more even footing, but consumers aren't buying overseas to save 10% - they're often saving 50% or more.

So applying GST to low value imports will barely put a dent in overseas orders, will COST the government money, and will increase costs for consumers... The only winners out of this are the people who gain employment in collecting the revenue.

But people persist with the idea that the Liberals know how to manage the economy?!

My brother was hit by gst on an fcp order for 1100 which included the cost of shipping.

Cost the government money... until they raise it from just 10%. (Do it in one step, and the backlash is too big too soon. Do it in two steps and they can excuse it away.)

I'm in retail and would benefit from the lower tax threshold. I imagine making eBay and Paypal handle GST collection would be a pretty easy place to start.

In the UK it is like our old system packages are held until the VAT is paid. The limit is low 15 pound and 39 for gifts. But it seems under 135 get through without duty.

£135 seems likely to be where the revenue exceeds the cost of collection...
