Hi guys my 142 is getting hi filled at the moment, so a bit of time to think!!
Has anyone on here transplanted a rotary into a 142 before, say a 12a or 13b??
Just a thought??

It's been done to 240s to my knowledge...

It was a passing thought for mine.
Just wasn't interested in more oil leaks than older cars tend to have in general. ;p
Would be fun no doubt.
I hear a combination of street and track rosaries fails getting tested and guts kicked out of them, daily.
My factory is only half block I'll from the shop that builds all of harops rotors. Amongst a bunch of other stuff.
Always a full kitted out time trial rx7 hooking up the street.

Yeah would make an interesting sleeper...
Even a std rotary would be a handful..

As a reformed rotorhead:
Don't bother. There are better choices nowdays. Mostly because the price of motors and boxes has gone through the roof.
I was going to do a 13BT conversion to my first 242 back in the very early '00s. It wasn't going to be overly difficult, particularly in my car that already had a Celica W50 behind the B21.
Additional hassles in a 140:
Cable clutch when every rotary came with hydraulic;
Narrow chassis rails, making the exhaust more difficult;
No bolt-in intercooler;
Less factory EFI cars makes the EFI conversion more difficult;
Pre-72 shifter position makes gearbox conversions more difficult.
I'm 100% sure it is do-able, but a NA rotary & associated parts is a lot of money for not that much power, and a turbo rotary is just a lot of money in 2017.
I'd look at any of the mainstream jap I4 motors or a B4204 - with or without a turbo, depending your goals. The Volvo motor is more work to convert to RWD, but keeps it Volvo (if that matters to you).

Buying a wrecked RX8 might be an idea.

Was only think rotary for surprise value, I thought a n/a 12a would fit with room to spare.
Might do some measurements, as I think engine would mount onto cross member,,, maybe worth the effort, I'll see.
Also has anyone bought new carpets for a 142?
Can find 144, 164 but no 142??? Thx

Carpets are all the same.
More or less. The come in two pieces. Front and rear.

As for other engines.
Duratec turbo. For that awesome power and reliability + relatively cheap.
Or duratorq for that coal burning fun

A stock/stockish 12A in a 142 would be a disappointment, performance wise.
It would certainly not be worth the effort of the conversion.

100%. I drove a mates KE20 with a stock 12A and it was very underwhelming and it weighed ~800kg.
It has since been bridge ported and has a very large turbo, I haven't driven it but I'd guess its now overwhelming.

And now leaks like a sive I'm sure

Yeah I know Rotors arnt the most reliable motors around but you certainly can't mistake the sound...

They can be made reliable nowdays. A little bit of care from the owner will go a long way too.
But they will always offer lousy fuel consumption relative to the power they make - and the gap has only become more obvious since decent EFI has gotten relatively cheap.
oldman
Yeah maintaining them is the key but fuel usage is always high, think I will stay with the original motor with twin carbs, maybe add headers and decent exhaust,,,

My first car, an RX2 Capella, the only great bit was the rev warning buzzer at some ridiculous thousands of rpm....
It sat in carport at Torquay whilst my 2 stroke roadbikes gave me commute and fun times, any weather, couldn't afford to drive the RX2....
In fact I siphoned the tank for my bike more than drove the thing.
Made a nice noise with a new resonator, lost half a tonne taking the stock one off!
