The lights in my 740GLE are looking a bit dim (or maybe my old&decrepit eyes are failing) so I'd like to replace, preferably upgrade the bulbs. I don't want to blind oncoming drivers so maybe HIDs are out, but can anyone recommend some replacements?
My headlights are the combined unit with hi/lo, driving and fog lights (so three bulbs) like in the 960s.

I use phillips +100 gloves in my 760. A lot brighter than a normal 60/55w globe but not blinding like a xenon look.

On my 90 745T I've fitted HIDs in the high beams, and will fit 100/55 H4 halogens for high/low when I get around to the wiring.
On my 244 I added headlight relays with new wiring and 100/55 bulbs, this made a big improvement over the 60/55 +100 bulbs it previously had.

Why only 100 on high beam? I run 100/120 on my Wagon with relays and such.
Yes those lights o&d.

I want to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, and being in the country it's high beam that needs the most improvement.

Purchased and installed Philips X-treme Vision H4 bulbs for Inga.
Cost was $52 delivered on Ebay.

Did you notice any difference?

Don't know yet as I haven't driven at night. Looks brighter in the daylight but I'll update when I have tested. I've yet to do the integrated driving & fog lights - they use H1s. Might also need to get the lights polished too.

Glass usually doesn't need a polish besides the obvious of them getting chipped and dinted with age.
Dauntless
The glass is usually quite pitted, but I don't see that being easy or cheap to remove.
Are the reflectors in good condition?
I find it difficult to drive at night with 55w high beams, now that I'm used to upgraded lighting. I get by with 100/55 H4s in the 244 because I don't want to convert to HIDs or add driving lights, but it's far from ideal.

Glass can be polished , look it up , I am sure I even saw a thread on it on TB. There are kits at hobby shops that sell diy telescope stuff but the material is avail on eBay of course.
If its the reflectors they need to be recoated or replaced , don't try to polish , the coating will come off.

Aj, you could install a light bar. Not too noticeable.

Alex, that's a bloody good idea... Those wide screen lights are perfect for that...
Dauntless
Hey Alex, I considered an LED light bar, however the beam is only good for about 100m, and the only place I could really hide it is under the bumper where it wouldn't be very effective.
Vee_Que
Why hide it?

Because I don't want the front of the car to look shit?
Anyway, I have a 22" LED light bar on the Hilux, and it's far too much of a flood beam to be used without a pair of driving lights.
It's very bright, it's almost like daylight for 100m in front of the car, but the range is no better than the 55w halogen headlights. I run a pair of 130w halogens in the driving lights to overcome this.
Ex850R
get a spot beam led bar?
Dauntless
The one I have is a combo beam, with the outer sections flood beam and the inner section spot beam. It's perfect on the Hilux, as when 4WDing at night you can see so much. Without one I'd never go 4WDing at night.
Even a huge spot beam LED light bar would only be good for about 200m I'd think. Certainly no match for decent driving lights.
