Justian Am planing on moving a 164 from Sydney to Brisbane in late December or early January it has been in a shed for a long time so driving is not really a option though it does run and has a handbreak, if anyone needs anything moved let me know and can discuss it, and if anyone has any experience in doing this cheeply am open to suggestions was probably going to tow it back on a car trailer
timmykroek Mate if it runs/starts well enough to drive onto a trailer, call statewide car carriers at somersby nsw. They use semi trailer car carriers so location can be a minor issue, but I moved a car from Gold Coast to Central Coast for 600 with them.
Major Ledfoot If it runs, has lights, and working brakes, your cheapest option is doing a brake bleed, dropping the engine and trans oil, changing the oil filter, doing a coolant flush, and getting an unregistered vehicle permit from the RMS ($27) plus fuel. I got Clyde (74 142) from Caboolture to Katoomba, using a UVP.
Justian Yes have thought about this a lot, doing what you said changing all the oils, but car has been sitting in a shed for 20 years and hand brake does work but have been told has no brakes. Would need to possibly have to change the brake master cylinder and front brake rubber hoses, this is assuming that the calipers are still good. Now I do have a 1974 164 with all those parts on, would says rubber hoses are possibly no good but though I might be able to put kits in the rest of the parts and take them with me and fit them. I am sure they are the same Rob(@Rob) might be able to confirm this for me, but you still have the thing that it has been sitting in a shed for 20 years and if it does break down not sure if the wife would want to be the one towing it that for home to Brisbane Would like to here what people think would you drive it home after changing brake parts and oils or would you put it on a trailer. This is the car some of you might have seen it on Gumtree
Rob the brakes will most likely be different but interchangeable. you would need to change the rotors as well. experience tells me the flex hoses will be buggered.
Justian Yes that is what I thought to, do you think I might be pushing my luck by driving it back from Sydney
Justian Has anyone used these 164 brake hoses off ebay or can anyone suggest a suppler for hoses in Brisbane or that posts need hoses for 1972 model http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HEL-Brake-Lines-KIT-For-Volvo-164-TE-VOL-4-002-/151964232196?hash=item2361c62a04:g:UecAAMXQlgtS-HNZ
Rob Not necessarily, they are quite reliable. Could be a costly and inconvenient exercise if it breaks down half way though..
Justian Yes that is what I thought just as easy to pick it up on the trailer and have a stress free trip
