The saga (Icelandic word) continues. Most of the work is done (oil, filter, plugs, fuel filter, PSF). There was a P0100 code, MAF circuit failure. Not apparent what caused this. Been cleared, to check if it returns.

Two issues remain:

- PSF flushed. Steering is better, but still when you flick it at rest, the assistance seems to take a second to catch up ie the wheel moves easily, then you feel the resistance. I guess that this is likely to be pump or rack.

- the PCV "top hose" is broken in two, below the manifold, with "smoke" coming out, when the engine warms up. Mechanic blocked it, made no difference to idle. He theorised that if the PCV box was clogged, then there would be no smoke. Is that sound?

Would think blocking pcv puts more pressure on engine oil seals and is as bad as a blocked pcv for tbe damage it can do.
I ran my old v70t with hose off as when i replaced it all that hose came adrift and i had had enough of working on it , boy did it stink and lefy an oily build up . . . .

The top hose is where the smoke comes from, so... it means that your mechanic does not know how the PCV system works on this car (most dont anyways) Smoke coming out partially points to a clog but the fact that the hose is fucked means you need to fix it ASAP regardless as it can now easily build excessive pressure

I am assuming you mean the hose that comes out vertically from the PCV and through the manifold and into the valve cover

The hose that runs sideways from the PCV to the pre-maf pipe is a different matter

The brittle one in foam insulation to the air intake hose is what I assumed., I guess the top one into the cam cover is more important

Yes it is the one that goes under the cam cover.

Instead of spending a squillion for that one hose, I should get the PCV kit. There's 2 types, the basic and the one with everything, and as you would know, a huge difference in price.

The basic does not include the injector o-rings (what other shape would a ring be but 'o') or the clamps, but I figure that these can be got separately.

Won't really know if that affects the idle until it is done.

I seem to have given the wrong impression. The hole was plugged (with his finger I think) for an instant to see if it made a difference. It didn't. It was then a case of digitus extractus.

So the hose still sits there, open ended where it goes up thru the manifold and into the spark plug cover, and open ended where it goes down into the oil trap.

I think that I will get the basic kit without the around-the-engine hose. Should I order injector o-rings as well? What do people think of this lot, as IDP and FCP do not seem to have a basic kit, only the full one :

His is also 04 build, but about 200 000 engine numbers higher.
Would that be right?

Lastly, any tips on getting a new PS pump. Can they be reconditioned ?

Done the relay under the dash for the power steering?

In a word, no. I did RTFM, was unaware of a relay. I can see that there is a fuse (no16), but was did not check it because logically, I would have no power steering if it did not work.

Please enlighten me. And any info on PS pumps would be good too.

Sorry to be a pain. I got this for some Swedish friends, I have only ever had French cars in 39 years of car ownership, So whilst I grasp all the similarities, including turning to an online forum, it is all the details and nuances that I have yet to learn.

the PS is variable effort and if the power is even slightly dodgy it can get hard randomly and do strange things
