Dauntless
Hi guys,
My 1990 745T has always made a screeching noise on full lock, I'm guessing it's the power steering pump as it doesn't sound like belt squeal. Lately it's been making the same noise when engine revs rise sharply.
I checked the PS fluid, it's brown and looks dirty. Is it worth trying to flush it out?
I'm not too familiar with power steering systems, but does this sound like the pump needs to be replaced?
Rob
Sounds like belt squeal to me :-/

That's the thing, it doesn't sound like belt squeal to me, it sounds like a metallic screech.

The worst a fluid change can do is confirm that the pump is buggered do it is worth a crack.

I assume Dex 3 ATF is OK?
Any idea how much I would need?

1.5 litres rings a bell, maybe 2 of ATF type F.

I have to use ATF type F in the power steering?

I am pretty sure that is the spec. The owners manual should confirm. Dex 3 will work but isn't quite right so can end up with the sounds you have now.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have an owner's manual. Does anyone have a 1990 manual they can look at for me?

Dex 3 should be the same. Its what the auto takes. It's what we always put in trucks too. They aren't that sensitive. Sounds like it's burnt though and maybe on its way out.

Cheers. Where would I get a reco or good used PS pump? I think I'll just change the fluid for now and see if that helps.
How do I identify which is the return line to the reservoir? Am I right in assuming it will come from the rack, and the supply line will go to the pump?
