Well, I've run into my first small issue with the new xc90. I was looking at it the other day and thought that the right front tyre looked a little low.
Pulled out the gauge and checked it and sure enough it was sitting at 30psi. The others were where I left them at around 40.
Thought that was strange as the tyres are brand new. Only a month old. I stepped back and then noticed that I thought there was a flat spot in the rim. At first I thought my eyes were deceiving me but double checked and def a small flattening in thecrim!
Had a closer look and noticed a very small hairline crack in the rim at the base of the spoke at the rim edge.
I'm figuring that at some stage in its life it has taken a decent whack and now the rim is leaking albeit very slowly. Can't believe the tyre Shop didn't notice the rim issue.
Anywho I'm guessing I'm up for a new vulcanis rim. Anyone on here point me in the right direction or help me out with one they just happen to have lying around!!?
The car drives and tracks great but would rather this fixed sooner than later not wanting a catastrophic failure of the rim on the highway!!
Any ball park idea on price? I'm guessing it can't be repaired
Cheers!
Chris
Wouldn't say it can't be repaired, but you'd have to get it to a repair shop for assessment. Wheel Solutions in Richmond are the go. I have used them and they did a superb job, others have said the same.
kyril
Thanks old hat. I'll give them a call. Maybe I can take a photo of it and send it to them and save an unnecessary trip to Melbourne (I'm in bendigo) if they say it can't be repaired.
If they reckon they can I might double it up for a trip to Berry's or Voldat for a transmission flush!?
Ex850R
What does it look like and what size?
Ex850R
I didn't think that anyone repaired anymore.
Liability being the issue.
Plus, alloys have to be normalised in a proper method by experts as a weld creates its own weak spot in the heat affected zone, personally I wouldn't drive on a welded alloy.
I am a trades welder fabricator.
Chris
It may depend on the direction of the crack from what I've read. @kyril I would call them for advice and then if it sounds promising send a photo. If not, Voldat or Berry would probably find you one

I had the most unbelievably ruined wheels successfully repaired by Precision Wheels in Gosford. They cost me about $250/wheel including welds and repainting. Well worth checking.
Edit: just realised you're down in Victoria I think. Still, should be a wheel shop down there, worth checking with them first.
VolvoDeger
send a pic as we might have a wheel from one of the xc 90s we are wrecking
cheers steve

Not sure if the pic of the crack shows up well but these are the type of wheels Deger!

That's a quality crack.
Show ACA, that can shut them up about the "fake" and counterfeit wheel b.s.
If your looking for someone in Vic.
ACE Alloy Wheel repairs, or newsy wheel repairs are your best bet.
kyril
Thanks @blondejay I'm still not confident about getting an aluminium wheel welded especially if it is a full depth crack. I'll give the couple of places a call though.
I'm hoping @VolvoDeger or another on here might be able to point me in the direction of a quality second hand unit.
See how we go!
Oh and just if people weren't aware fcp euro are having a 30% off sale until tuesday.

Given that these business successfully widen alloy wheels for pro street and other high powered monsters.
You have nothing g to worry about.
Neway built my Steelies, and are about to build my new set.
ACE reshaped my 80's 3piece rays, before I refurbished them.

Well wheel solutions put me through to a chap called Peter West at the mag wheel centre. He said he could weld it up but strictly speaking it is then not roadworthy. It would be about 300-400 to do after the wheel was repainted.
I think I'm going to have try and find a used rim. I wouldnt be happy driving on a welded rim no matter how well the welder did his job. It's just never going to be as strong a wheel again.
Other option is to make an insurance claim. I'll have to check the excess on that!

It's entirely up to you.
I honestly wouldn't stress about it.
They will probably be stronger than the factory cheese wheel after they have finished with it.
No wheel repair or modifications to alloy wheels are legal as per Vic roads. No doubt the other states as well.
Steel wheels are a different fish.
You can re-barrel. And even change the pcd.
End of the day its your call and what you feel comfortable on.
However the thousands of wheels that get repairs from these two companies every year is enough to comfort me.
VolvoDeger
Sorry had a look but no we sold a set not that long ago
kyril
Cheers @blondejay! I'll def give it some thought.
Thanks for having a look @VolvoDeger

Option to buy a whole new set of second hand wheels at that price to repair , call Voldat or BMG , Mark , Graeme.
kyril
Yeah I was thinking that @Ex850R but the vulcanis has grown on me and I haven't yet seen an aftermarket design I like!!?
Ex850R
other , stronger design from volvo?
kyril
In terms of original Volvo design in the 19x 8 size. The two I like are
As a first preference I think they are around a 2012 r design wheel
And
The 19 Ince exec wheels
