It appears my 04' 2.5T XC90 is in need of new shocks but would like your view. Seems a bit floaty on the highway and the wind can push it about. The symptoms are exactly the same as one of my other cars before replacing the shocks earlier this year.. but the xc90 is a big heavy lump so maybe it's normal. 142,000kms and look to be original shocks (no service history/receipts for shocks either)
1.
Time for replacement?
2.
I'm thinking just go direct replacement to what I have got at the moment as I want the comfort, but am hoping the floaty-ness will go away. Recommendations/Thoughts/Experiences?
3.
Yet to have a look but do you think I would have nivomats up the back? They appear short and fat from a quick under-car look. Will get the product numbers off them to confirm soon.

Further Note:
The vehicle does 100km each work day on the highway sitting at 100kmph. Please recommend shocks that are a good balance between comfort and stability for this daily journey. Cheers.

are they actually soft or do you other issues as not many shocks are changed on xc90 compared to the other range
bigal
Well its soft as in comfortable yes. Nothing ridiculous. Just not sure if the floaty feeling is normal on the highway because its big and heavy.
Perhaps I should test drive one at a car yard to see how that compares?

Pump up the tyres more. Typically the manufacturer of any vehicle want them to feel nice....
Give em 10psi more using a quality pressure gauge you own of course.
bigal
Ah good point! It has a lot of tyre wall as I have the very basic smallest rims.
Another comparison.. our 2010 Kia Sportage feels like a go-kart compared to the XC90.

So should be fairly normal for these shocks to reach 142,000kms ok?
VolvoDeger
I would say so give them a bounce test as well but as snoop said pump higher than placard says, always put my tyres up more even on trailers i go a lot more.
I just did a xc90 shocker a couple of days ago and it's not very common compared to xc70 and earlier cars

my XC90 (07) felt like a boat on the 17" rims....
swapped to 19's and feels much better
The upper spring seats are very much known to fail and cause noise and spongyness as well
