Hi guys,
I'm moving house closer into town, and whilst its not necessarily a bad suburb or anything, I don't think it'd be as secure as where I currently mine live.
Now I can deal with being bashed up on the street on my way home, having my washing stolen and having the house ransacked, but if my car got stolen it'd tip me over the edge. Does the 1996 850r come with any form of immobiliser standard?
When I bought the car it came with a remote fob which never worked, but I am now wondering whether that would also have activated an immobiliser were it working. There is an "anti theft" light that flashes on the stereo head unit but I'm not sure if that's just for the stereo, or is alluding to some kind of car security system.
If we don't have one standard, I'd probably want to install one, in which case does anyone have any recommendations as far as models etc they've had good or bad experience with?

If the key is soft rubber... yes
If the key is solid plastic then no

You could get used key fob and module and put that in if you don't have that now.
If you don't have a key with chip in it, as Philip Bear says, then you need what I said or pay Volvo a motza to code a new key for your module.
Rs have immobiliser and sometimes alarm too. Again, no fob or key with chip, get modules and key from another car used.
Wouldn't worry about car being stolen. It's a Volvo....
Only having a window smashed and ransacked with glove box being jammed open to worry about. Druggies...

Picture of the key attached. Don't have the fob with me right now but will try to get a shot of it too.
Edit: actually it looks like I can't attach pics using my phone so will try later on computer

@Julian you're supposed to be able to attach pics with your phone, what went wrong?

if 1996 it should be in the key head and if require new key your locksmith should be able to programme or any of us
independent as do it...................................

It has a coded key but that will only stop the car being started.
As i have said before the central locking/Alarm are separate units and unique after market units to Australia. Best bet is to replace them.
You can source the Basic Alarm or Alram guard 2 from overseas.

that is immobilser not central locking or alarm
nickm
Yes 2 different systems.
A flashing light on the dash is an extra deterrent.
Keyless locking is also handy.
And I have not seen many Australian 850 Volvos with a functioning system.

The light is there but either not working or not enabled.
William (can't tag him as don't know his @name.....can that be fixed search wise? ) has the gear to sort out all that stuff.

keyless unit is beside glove box and has only one plug and off you go if its late 96

Pic of the key and remote attached. The remote had two buttons (it looks like one has broken in at some point) and pressing buttons on it doesn't do anything. I am yet to look for the unit behind the dash, but do these pics give any info as to what system my car likely has? I suppose ideally I'd like to have remote central locking functioning and have a working immobiliser
nickm
The key is chipped but it can be easily cloned.
Australian Aftermarket fob. You could try finding a replacement but easier to swap to the UK/US system
Julian
Ok, it'd certainly be good to get the alarm and central locking working, but as I understand it then there is an immobiliser that is deactivated when the chipped key (pictured) is used to start it? It's good if that's the case.
nickm
Yes they will not be able to start the car without a chipped key or a flat bed.
Smashed windows or damaged doors locks are another issue.
Believe me 850's are tough and require a specific way of getting into.
Opportunists are generally after what they can see.
Julian
Yeah, before I bought the car the owner said someone had tried breaking into it and broken the driver's side door lock in the process. I have a replacement lock but haven't yet fitted it
Ex850R
Something i have been meaning to look into and post about , the door lock is easily opened anyway...
I have found that on two of my V70s , tugging on the drivers door handle repeatedly will unlock the door.
Wether this is due to previous attempts to get in ( doubtful as no damage at all) or wear in the door lock system.
The ONLY way to stop this is to deadlock the doors.
Turning the key in the drivers door lock to the left will deadlock it 9 and all othere i think) and the above issue cannot be repeated , you cannot tug at the handle and get in.

PM me if you want to know how.
I slammed my tailgate one day and the whole car locked it's self.

Mine does that all the time I have to be so careful to take the keys out it will also lock itself if I leave the keys in the ignition randomly
