I suggest buying waste oil from a workshop, that way you get the best and worst of all the above oils, you know it works cos they all thought they had the best and you can't go wrong. Or from a chip shop.

Anytime this question is asked nobody is any the wiser cos too many conflicting advices, makes for fun reading though....

My only real advice is to not get the dirty black oil on you when you pull the sump plug!

Magnet plug! Stick in a big screwy and it hops on.
Really dislike the toxic smell though.
I think I am more sensitive to crap like that now. Doing all fluids change and filter leaves me unwell for a bit.

Anyone do remote filter housings? Maybe a valve on the sump dump plug too?
Not much room on a P80 but 2 series a doddle I reckon.

Yes, I changed the oil and using a Castrol 20/50 oil.

I figure that its coming to Summer so the weather is going to be very hot and it would be good to have a thicker oil.

When the weather cools down In Autumn I will switch to a lighter oil. I'm toying with the idea of using synthetics but I don't know whether the change over will be detrimental to the old engine.

I used a synthetic 10w40 oil for my 240's last oil change simply because it's what I had, and there have been no detrimental effects. This is with approx 410,00km on the engine.
Only thing I've noticed is that it seems to burn oil more quickly than before (I'm having to top up every two weeks or so - previously, on 20W50 mineral oil, it was at least 6 weeks between top ups.)

@240 The thinner (less viscous) engine oil finds its way through the small gaps in an old engine more easily. This is not an unexpected result. Mostly people go to a very slightly more viscous grade as engines age for this reason.

Yeah that's what I figured.
However my rear main seal was done 8,000km ago and the front seals were all done in the last 75,000km so that's probably why I haven't seen any leaks!

That's because you've gone too Thin!

No issue going between synthetic and non though, you're thinking of diesel oil vs petrol car oil.
