Some of the best advice so far.

Standard practice is to change the filter whenever changing the oil, I personally think that changing the oil any more regularly than 10,000km intervals isn't necessary, unless the car sees very heavy usage eg: racing.
However you could do oil and filter every 10k, with an oil only change every 5k.
Some not great advice here, good if you drive only highway distances, but for city driving? Towing? Lots of stop start? too long an interval.
Oems recommend 10-15k intervals for the highway driven cars. In all the manuals though, the recommend to do
half the normal interval in extreme driving, which includes stop start city driving, towing. Excessive high speeds.
So Angus is incorrect and while you won't kill your engine sooner, it will be more worn due to oils breaking down.
Time is just as important, every 6 months regardless of the kms is a good habit to follow for making the engine last longer and stay clean.
Cheap non synthetic oil from generic brands are not worth putting in your motor if you want the engine to last. Filters are $15, why be a tightarse and not get one when you get oil?
I've seen too many engines that have had the 10-15k.intervals that are sludgy by 100k because they do stop start work, it also accelerates valve stem seal wear. Its why most e90 bmw 3 series now smoke..
