Prados and hiluxes bend front stub arms pretty easily, to call them proper 4wds is a stretch.
Any engine will suffer if not serviced regularly, I'm sure the original poster understands this, and I'm sure his attitude towards maintenance won't change if he does buy a Toyota.
If talking about serious 4WDing then I agree with you, but he's not going to bend anything driving on roads. We have a couple of these cars come through the workshop each week typically, and I've only seen one bent control arm, on a Hilux that ran into a drain doing a fair speed.

They are pretty good in most ways, we look after a few of these as well, a couple of things I've noticed:
Front lower control arm bushes wearing out is getting pretty common, and the bolts often rust into the crush tube of the bush, so to remove them you need to cut the heads off the bolts with an oxy torch. We've come across this a few times now.
Rear CV boots sometimes split, a bit of work involved to change them.
The "sealed for life" auto will eventually fail if the fluid and filter isn't changed periodically, a bit like the Volvo's.
