Angus242164;89363 wroteThe basic bottom end of the engine dates right back to the early '80's and was used by GM in just about everything with versions from 1.3 to 2.4 litres. This has the DOHC head dating back to the Calibra and early Vectra, obviously they kept making improvements over the years and this was one of the final applications for that engine family.
It's very basic under the bonnet compared to the common rail diesel in the other Astra, which was a new design at the time and incorporates a lot more tech.
The norm in the UK as the block was common to some of the smaller engines was to fit the 2.0 turbo from the Cavalier and Vectra into a Nova, or later on the Corsa SB (the version that was available here as the Barina), or an Astra.
