Well, it has finally got me, I have a gearbox problem with the XC70. I bet nobody saw THAT coming. (sarcasm, just in case you missed it.)
But, it is probably not the gearbox itself. The problem is I can no longer move the shifter to the left to select manual mode.
Symptoms/steps were as follows:
1. Was descending a steep bit with the trailer on the back, so moved the lever to the left to select manual mode. As I did so there was a very slight but detectable sort of "scrinch" of something plastic giving way.
2. Descended the hill ok, moved the selector back to auto with a much more definite "scrinch" of something plastic putting up a fight and failing.
3. Found that the selector is now feeling a bit odd and needs to be held slightly to the right to be able to move out of park and through the normal gears, particularly so when trying to get into drive, needs quite a bit of sideways pressure to the right.
4. Manual mode is no longer accessible, the lever will NOT move to the left (at least I am not willing to put enough pressure on it to force the issue.)
So at a guess there was some kind of plastic gateway or cutout that has failed or collapsed into the path of the selector.
Can anyone point me at a step by step to get to the gateway or selector device, or any other howto that addresses this issue, my googling has failed me. I do use manual mode a LOT and I need it here in Adelaide, particularly with the big hill descents around us.

P.S. It never rains but it pours, driving home this evening, on a perfectly smooth straight road, something went "GLOING!" from under the front left, so loudly my wife heard it through the handsfree kit on the phone. (we were talking at the time) Not sure what that was all about, any suggestions welcome.

Hey Matt,
To have any kind of decent look you will need to remove the shifter knob. To do this, put the vehicle in park with the key off so it won't come out of park. Kneel on the seat so you can grab hold of the shifter knob firmly and pull very sharply directly up. You are pretty much ripping it out but this is how they come out. From there, you can easily remove the centre console cover (if your car is a pre-facelift you will need to remove the pen holder below the climate unit first, its just clipped in so get a small screwdriver to flick it out, then you can release the tabs for the gear selector surround). Once you have those removed, you should be able to get a pretty good look. I'd say your assumption that something broke isn't far off the mark but maybe something just got caught in. If need be you could swap in another selector assembly from another car. Its only 4 bolts around the base, 2 bolts under the passenger side carpet where the cable runs through and its only one cable on the trans itself. I could give you a more detailed instruction if required but I think you'll figure it out.
Second part: No idea hahahaha.
Regards,
Jeremy.

Thanks Jeremy, you described that really well, and as a fellow early XC70 owner, somehow I'm not surprised you know the procedure. ;^) Mine is pre-facelift from what you say, as I do have the pen holder.
And yeah, the "gloing" has really got me scratching my head.

Duncan, that's a great help also.
I note that the supplier you linked is U.S. based. Does this mean those parts are hard to get in Australia?

Ive actually never had it happen in any of ours yet, I just know how to rip apart the gear selector as Ive done that a few times haha.
The place Duncan linked you to - FCP Euro - are indeed US based but they ship to Australia. Browse through and see if theres any other bits you want/need as you will be paying exorbitant postage charges anyway and its cheaper to get lots of things at once than it is to only get a few haha.
