Angus242164;88621 wroteIf the fluid that came out when it was serviced wasn't black/burnt smelling, it doesn't slip when in gear, and the kickdown cable is adjusted correctly, then the problem is probably isolated to the valve body, so you could fit a valve body from another trans, and it may fix it without replacing the whole trans.
Whether it's much easier to replace the valve body in the car, compared to changing the whole trans is debatable.
The AW71 autos from '83 to '93 are all the same as far as I'm aware.
89/90 saw the release of the AW70L with lockup TQ
This is fully swappable with the AW70 found in the earlier cars
AW71L from a 98 940s will even swap it if you replace the kick down cable with a 240 one
