P2 or p3 xc70?
(Does it look like an 01 or like an 09 xc70?)
Any readings for diagnostic tools not using a volvo dice unit with volvo vida are useless
tpm
looks more like an 09 model I guess its MY is 08. Surely these codes/messages mean something?
Philia_Bear
Most non volvo readers will interpret codes incorectly
The first pic is the best because it proves that the cem knows something non volvo asked to talk to it and the cem told it to get lost
The other codes can be set by just turning the key on and off to quickly or by a real fault
You need vida to tell you the history on the fault to see how many times it occured and when it occured to know if its real or false
Where in aus are you based?
Car have a 5 speed trans or 6 speed?
tpm
I believe it's 6 speed, I'm in Melbourne. It's a D5 turbo, I took it for a test drive and it was nice. No apparent problems. Sorry, what's vida?
Philia_Bear
In melb
Either voldat or barrys would be the best place to get the car scanned
Philia_Bear
Vida is yhe software that is from volvo to run the physcical scan tool called a dice

Thanks, this is really helpful-- I wanted to take it to Barry's but the seller wouldn't let me, hence the non-volvo mobile mechanic (StateRoads btw).
So, all things being equal, if it is in otherwise good condition, checked by qualified mechanic, good service records, drives well, and I like it, should I buy it? Or will it be a lemon???
Philia_Bear
Which engine ?
How many km?
Can you give me a price range? (I can give you value based on this)
Maitenance history?
Does it have any of the nicer options like
Radar cruise?
Heated seats?
Heads up display?
tpm
Adaptive cruise control
Heated seats
Blind spot warning
Some sort of red-light warning thing
"laminated" side windows (supposed to keep the sound out)
156K km
D5 turbo
according to carsales it's value is $11,400 for the km done, but asking price is a fair bit higher than that
(I'm thinking of offering 12,500)
no service receipts in the maintenance history, but basic services done on time or before time
no timing belt change (he said it's done at 180K)
very clean, no accidents, dents, scratches
Philia_Bear
Timing belt is 10 years or 160k
Volvo says 10 years or 180k but i have seen lots of failures at 170k
Its a fully optioned car so the price is resonable
I would have said anything up to 15k would be resonable because of the options
Id say taking the risk is worth it as even if you need to imediatly shell out 1k for timing belt your still doing quite good
tpm
OK thanks, that's the kind of judgement and information I need. Looks like its got another year before the timing belt needs to be changed. I've never owned a european car before so I'm somewhat trepidatious. I'll make an offer, see how I go. Thanks for the Berrys recommendation too.

Do the timing belt. It's not a thing you play games with and risk a massive repair bill.
I saw it on Gumtree, buy it.
Or I will!
tpm
deal closed . Thanks!
VolvoDeger
if you require scanning Masons Prestige Volvo can do it for you.
tpm
thanks, but it's the wrong side of town for me-- berry's is closer

There was a nearly perfect one of this very model at my mechanic with a destroyed engine from a belt failure, and I believe it went early. The owner was close to throwing in the towel and I was going to buy it for my wife, but at the last minute he coughed up the money and had it fixed. Darn it.
Seriously, you are going to have to do the belt soon enough in terms of how long you'll own the car anyway, so why risk it for the sake of a few thousand km?
tpm
thanks, if it's possible to find out what kms it did when it failed that would be useful-- nevertheless will endeavour to get it done before xmas

I'm not due to see him for a while... (unless that "gloing" noise my XC70 made yesterday proves to be a serious problem) but put it this way.
Let's say the nominal life of the belt is 170,000 km. And the cost of replacement will be around $1000. (A bit of a guess, but I think I am close).
Therefore, the belt has ((170,000 - 15600) /170,000 ) * $1000 value left in it, which is a grand total of $82.35
So, for 82 dollars, and a few cents, are you willing to risk the engine?
I certainly would not.
Matt

OK point taken; can't argue those numbers, thanks.
