So a colleague has a 2009 2.5 litre Outback in the early stages of head gasket failure (oil leak but no mixing with the water yet). Car has only done 49k. Stealer says $4.5k and 10 days to fix. Now I know it is likely an engine out job, but seriously??????
I seem to recall peeps on here saying it could be fixed properly with an upgraded gasket, or was I dreaming? Also, any thoughts on a good indy that can get this done in a sensible timeframe and for a more realistic price? ATM they are thinking about dumping it but as they are also looking to sell their other car and renovate this is another hassle they don't need.
Thoughts welcome.
Sorry, should have said Melbourne and ideally eastern suburbs

Indi should be 2.5-3k and 2 days
Not sure on who is a good scubarat place in melb though

The later gasket I'm lead to believe is less likely to fail. My sister has a forester with the same motor, 250,000kms and no failures.
Dealer price can be talked down, but their warranty is far better than an independent too. Just sounds like that dealer doesn't want the business to me. It is an engine out job, but they are the easiest motors to get in an out. Speaking as a mechanic.

Aren't they a drop out frame on a rolling box using a hoist after undoing 10 odd bolts?
Chris
Thanks guys, sounds more like it. I will pass on, cheers

There will be a Subaru specialist who has the headgaskets down to a fine art so will be much cheaper

A few in and around Footscray, I will get you some info.

Thanks Snoopy

Does anyone else think that its ridiculous that a head gasket starts to fail after 49000 k's?
Chris
Yes, the owners :)

Its a time thing not a km thing
Also if this is a city car it could still have more hours on the motor than a car which did 300000km on the highway
Engines need hour meters on them

You mentioned they are thinking of dumping it.
Before that happens consider this
I've used liquid intelligence 245 on two occasions and it worked for me.
Held up long term as well.
Its worth checking out their website and calling them for advice regarding its efficacy in your specific situation. I think they offer a money back guarantee as well.
And no I do not want to get into a debate with anyone about the use of this product.
I'm not a mechanic, just a little mechanically minded and it worked for me.
Chris
No worries thanks @ingabinga all suggestions welcome. I thought their reaction was a little over the top. I would look for a fix if it was mine

Here ye go, apologies for delay.. Cannot go wrong with these guys.
A mate is consulting there, knows the business.
Chris
Cool, thanks Snoopy

I helped to a mates one over a weekend. Engine out, but was a simple job
Chris
Yeah the dealer must be planning to fly to Japan to get the tools for the job if he wants the car for 10 days :)
Chris
Looks like they're dumping it unfixed. A work mate of the husband is happy to fix it himself and the owners just cbf so... They are keen on a circa 2010 XC60. Don't know enough about then to recommend or not. I pointed out what looks like an excellent V50 on carsales but apparently this is not sufficiently exciting for him.

See my RADAR post for an '08 XC70 Diesel for 14K. Can't go wrong for that money, be quick!

Going from an Outback to a V50 will be squishy.
They really are quite small.
I nearly had an awd T5 one years ago as they bought it and sold it right away, mustn't have looked to hard before buying as they then wanted a bigger v70.... Lost heaps they did, crazy.
