Just wondering ... anyone have comments about 2001-2003 'Cross Country' XC 70's? I have seen many around, they look like a good compromise vehicle, not jacked up and screaming Monster Truck Derby, yet not Morris 1100 bogged taking green garden waste to the tip. Majority of mechanics I have asked have said 'don't go near them' Yet I would like one.

How fast can you run?
How deep are your pockets?
If not very fast, nor very deep, then don't bother looking at them... although this mainly applies to auto rather than manuals

Buy a few si you can use up all the auto boxes as spares maybe....
Or don't at all.
They seem to cost a lot too , crazy as even further cheap not worth the risk.
Some will have no issue but it's a matter of when not if.
Yes , they are very nice to be in though!

Think there has got to be nearly 100% failure of those cheese gearboxes

find a manual.

I bought one and used it for a couple of years......
Someone else had spent nearly 20,000- in maintenance in the few years before.
It was nice to drive and rarely let me down.
But I knew it was a ticking timebomb.
Of expensive repairs eventually.
It had a good transmission though.
Heaps of information about these transmissions online and the various service methods said to prolong their life.

Heaps online but fact is it costs to fix something that is bound to fail and be scrap value which is nothing atm.

Ive had 15 of them pass through my personal hands
All of them failed horribly in one way or another
Which is really sad because as stated they looked nice and drove great and had a fantastic interior
Manual d5 import would be the only way i would ever do another

I have a 2002 Cross Country, love it. It's a good looking car with a beautiful interior and quite nice to drive. Mine was an auto, its a manual now as the auto died like them all, and I converted it.
Mum has a slightly later 2006 model, she loves it, hers is on 80,000 and no signs of auto problems yet, apparently the later ones are slightly improved. We have a big cooler on hers as well.
Early (2000-2001) models had the throttle module that died as well. Try get a 2002 when they switch to the Bosch unit that doesn't fail (my car has this one).
They are very hard on the front end, you will be amazed at how fast you go through brake pads and rotors, lower control arms, ball joints, tie rods, strut tops, engine mounts etc.
Mum and I both only use ours occasionally, and pretty much strictly only long trips. Don't buy one if you plan on using it around town. It will kill the auto, kill the turbo, you'll be doing brakes and strut tops just about every 2nd service, it's ridiculous. I have the older 850-based V70 as a daily, and mum has an 85 240 as her daily.
