Our 2010 XC90 D5 has started to make what sounds to be a real wheel bearing noise in the last week or 2. I don't think its the tyres, as they have been on for 6 months and have been silent. Vehicle has done 170,000k's
Common problem? parts cost? Volvo dealer job, or just a good local mechanic? any tricks involved?
any advice welcome

What tyre brand are you using? Cheap Chinese ones get noisy after a bit.

I'm using Continental's, to suit the 19" rims, std size (255/50x19 i think) I have been really impressed by them so far. Think it is a bearing, Thanks Philia Bear for the weblink

Just ordered the hub assembly out of the US - Genuine Volvo - less than half local cost

Just to close the thread, Drivers side hub assembly fitted by my local mechanic for $100, Hub Assembly ordered through FCPeuro and total job finished for under $500. Thanks again Philia Bear for the FCPeuro weblink. Car now as quiet as a mouse!

Very welcome
Did you find out the cause of failure on the old bearing?

Can only assume its a combination of 170,000km + towbar (use unknown). Cant really complain about replacing wheel bearings with the km's travelled.

And this is the reason I'm confident in buying a Volvo! Excellent advice and help from experts. Great stuff.
