Does anyone have any experience with the Federal 595 RSR?
I'll admit, historically, I'm a bit of a tyre snob and tend to stick with what I know, what I've driven on, etc.
I wouldn't mind trying something different.
I'm not massively concerned about service life, the vehicle is likely to do less than 10k per year.
I want something grippy in 215/40/17 or 205/45/17.
Need to be ok in the rain and also not massively noisy as I plan to do a little bit of longer distance driving on them too.
I remember someone mentioning somewhere to get federal stuff from with good pricing???

EBay.

Gotta be 87 min too for us.

Nope. Too tall.
Rob
no such thing as 225/40R17 :(
AshDVS
Yes, but 225 is too wide on a lowered 850 or x70 with ET43 wheels.
Not sure if federal do a 225/40 though.
Rob
My 235/45s Don't scrub at all. Obviously it contributes to my obscene turning radius but they don't touch anywhere.

Largely due to limited steering lock. I would think that nearing full suspension compression with some lock on, they'd make sweet love to the inner guard.
IMO they're a bit too wide for a Canisto too and this would be noticeable just after turn-in when the car takes a 'set' on a long sweeping corner - it'd wriggle around a bit longer than would be ideal.
You experience this to varying degrees with the same size tyres of differing brands or models too.
Bridgestone RE050A (Very expensive but fitted as oem to some makes) has a very stiff sidewall. Replace this tyre with an RE001 or (a bit later) RE002 which last a little longer but have a softer sidewall.
Same car, same corner, it feels a bit more nervous as it loads up the weighted front corner. Once suspension is at compression and sidewall has rolled over, all is well and it feels fine, it just doesn't get to that 'nice' point soon enough.
Throw on a comparable tyre like a Yokohama S226 and it's worse still. A Yoko 215 is nearly always wider than a Bridgestone 215, thus amplifying sidewall movement/flex even more.
This characteristic is exaggerated as we go past ideal tyre widths on rims.
If it was an 8" wide rim, I'd go a 235. On a 7.5" though, 225 should really be about it.
The Titan and Volan wheels are a 17x7 too.
Rob
My train of thought was 215/45 or 225/40.. There is no way I'm fitting 235s to it, they are clearly to wide

I got 225/45 Michie Pilot sports on the Canisto's and. They scrub inside at front but rear is fine , they sit on rim nice n flush too. Conti Sport are like that too. Dunno what they're like.

on a 7.5" ET43 rim (Canistos, 17" Comets, etc) for C70/S70/V70 215/45/17 is the factory tyre size.
It could also quite possibly be that the inner guards and guard liners are a more accepting shape than they were on the 850 (speculating, I could check if the part number is the same).
Anyone know if the turning circle between 850 and S70/V70 is the same?

850 and S70 are the same, C70 is 1.5m greater.
I will be going 215/45R17 then.. easy.

Racing Ready was Doug very nice prices on unfitted Federals. Freight & fitting might undo all of the price advantage, though.
I've got the base spec 595s on the front of my silver S40, in 205/45. I like them. Not too noisy (although the rubbish on the rear would drown out WW3), grippier than I expected, good in the wet. Oddly, they also torque steer a fair bit less than the worn (Continentals?) that were previously fitted.
A friend has used the up-spec model (595SS??). And raved about the grip wet and dry. No idea about lifespan or noise or anything.
The general vibe is that for any particular use, Federals will offer at least 90% of the performance, at a considerably lower price. YMMV.

Good link! Cheers!

Freight for tyres is going to hurt me. Probably the best thing I can do is shop hard locally.

Have a chat to costco...
Workmate just did a set of 4 215/40/17 RE002's onto his V70, $666 installed
they are doing nearly as good as the RE050a's before and wearing far better
The wife's car has had a set of RE050a's on the rear (225/45/17) for 30k now and I swear I'm going to have to replace them from age before anything else
BMW is running some cheap MOMO M3's ($120 tyre M&B for 245/40/18) and they have proved to be purfect for the twisty's but only good for 3-4 laps at EC on the GP circuit (got greasy like most >200 tread wear tyres do)

Mmmmm , forgot about Costco , the tyre shop is outside of the main shop in Docklands Ash , at the carpark really.
Its a good price but so it should be , they introduced them cheap , made in Japan , now exxy and Indonesian....
Ex850R
Rob , Ash , i had these on my R and they were outstanding when warmed up a bit , old stock but thats ok , cheaper than my $$$ i paid........
