240 M47 manual - sloppy shifter

Dear Volvo gurus,

I need some advice from the 240 manual specialists. The gear shifter in my 240 wagon is pretty sloppy (side-to-side travel) when engaged in gear. I don't have any issues with popping out of gears, just feels a lot more wobbly than I feel like it should. I made a couple of videos (below) to indicate the level of play.

From getting underneath the car, it doesn't look like the linkage itself has a great deal of play, so is the answer simply that the gearbox is old and worn and getting tired? Any advice or insight gratefully appreciated, as always.

@lasercowboy In my long-gone car with an M45, there were white... nylon/plastic bushes that were worn, causing rattling when driving. But that looks ok in the short bit of video I saw. As for youtube clips, I think I just drag the URL from one browser window into this ozvolvo text box - I think!?

But looking where they go, I can't see it making much of a difference. My confusion is compounded by the section in the Haynes manual being rubbish, and there not being any nice pictorial guides that I can find on the interwebs.

People rave about the bronze bushes, but again looking at where the play is and where they'd go, I'm not convinced they would make much of a noticeable difference to the play I'm seeing?

The play your seeing is with the shift forks inside the gearbox
I have an M47 with sub 80k on it and just tested it to make sure I was on with what level of play is normal

Its excessive just because of the ratio of the shifter length above and below the ball

There are some notes and a few guides on t-bricks about making the shifter into a short shifter which reduces the play quite a bit

On Friday RSI quoted on their facebook page that they're selling sets of bronze shifter bushings for $15 among other cheap things

@Philia_Bear that makes a lot of sense actually - it looks like a lever effect.

I also have a short shifter on my m47 and it's really good. You don't have to ask the passenger to move their leg before going into reverse!

@240Joe Some of my most memorable encounters started with the accidental knee-touch when engaging reverse in my old blue 240... :D

Did you need to adjust the pivot bracket to move the pivot position up a little to give you enough clearance above the trans?

Haha yes, you might call this the married man's shifter.

There's no need to move or adjust anything, it'll just hook straight up.

Hmmmm - I'm intrigued! Did you cut an original and weld in a section yourself? I may have to find a friendly welder!

No I got mine years ago from someone on TB who was doing heaps of them. It couldn't be too hard for a good welder to knock them up
