V8 Transmission Valve Bodys

Hi guys,

Been lurking on this and the swedespeed forums for a while now as I do my research into the XC90s. This question may have been answered elsewhere but, do the Aus shipped V8s have the same VB issue that is an issue for other world market XC90s from I think around 2005 to late 2007? I've seen a few advertised with transmission rebuilds some I suspect I know the answer.

If so I guess we still have to avoid transmission serial numbers before 06J.

Have my heart set on a v8 but could be swayed by a really nice D5 executive....... Not interested in the I6 cause I may as well find a V8 and have more fun with the same amount of fuel!!! ;)

Oh and If I do find a nice one local to me does anyone on here know if Berry Motors would do an independent check for me? Looks like they are the people to see in melb!!

Hey mate,

Berry Motor Group employee here. We have done I think 1 valve body and 1 transmission on 2 different XC90 V8's in the 8 months I have worked there (since November last year). The owners wife drives one, and our sales manager's wife also drives one, both without any issues with the transmission, and they love them. We also have done 1 or 2 valve bodies in the diesels as well, so they're not all 100% trouble free, but seemingly that 6 speed transmission is more reliable than the 5 speed it replaced.

Call us and speak to Graeme or Mark (@iceton1975), they should be able to tell you exactly which model year to avoid if any. We also do independent inspections all the time, so no problems there. 9874 5544 is our number, we are available Monday to Friday :)

Always nice to get honest opinions! By all accounts they are awesome vehicles and since my other half said the next car we get will be a seven seater, and "not a damn van" I was allowed to "research! :)

I kept coming back to the XC90 for a value for money proposition and the fact that with the seven seats up you can still carry more than just a folded flat cardboard box!!

It will be our second car (the old pathfinder whilst reliable is getting long in the tooth........) So although I get the choice the budget will be limited so it accordingly limits my selection. Boooo.......

I'll definitely be able be giving you guys a call to discuss!

I do hope a good V8 will still be on the market but like I said a nice D5 executive may also find a nice home as I'll be doing a few kays up and done the highway to work

For a comparison
In 2008 when all of the 4 speed gm boxes from the t6's were failing, i was doing 4 a week every week for months on end

The rate of failure on the 6 speed boxes has been at a normal rate of two to 3 a year

The 6 speed boxed just need the fluid flushed with good full synthetic fluid every 100k
The 2 failed 6 speed boxes i have seen in the last year were both on cars with 150k and had trailer hitches and had horse gear in the back of the car. Neither had been serviced properly either

Nice to hear that. From what I read about them it sounded like that if you got a V8 with the dodgy valve body in it it was a matter of when not if the tranny would fail.

But as far as cars go I only hear good things about the longevity and reliability of the v8. As long as you look after it. (which is pretty much a given for any car these days!)

I think the valve body issues with the 6 speeds were fixed in 2007 or 2008 as when you search for threads the vast majority seem to be MY 2005 through 2007.

Rather than starting a new thread,

Would anyone be able to give me a ball park figure on how much to fit a tow bar to an 08 V8 XC90?

There's one I'm interested in but with no tow bar fitted (which is good for me as I know it hasn't been flogged out with horse floats or the like!!!) just an added expense I have to factor.

TBH the pickings among XC90s in Vic are pretty poor at the moment. There have been better, lower mileage ones at this sort of money or a bit more. Are you set on a V8? If not, consider

Yea I know Oldhat. I've been looking for quite a while knowing that in the near future I'll be in the market. It's been frustrating watching some really nice ones get sold before I'm ready!!

Slim is an understatement. Am pretty keen on the V8. I'm hoping a really nice one comes along soon. But I am also open to a nice D5 executive. I have seen that one and it is actually saved in my list. pity there is no photos!!

Higher kms but looks very well looked after. Unfortunately the budget is stuck at around th 15k-16k from the financial controller so can't quite jump up to the next level unless someone wants to take a big hit on their price!

If it has been sitting around with little interest many sellers will, so if you see one like that maybe check it out

I agree Chris, and there are a view that have been sitting around for quite a while so it is definitely worth a shot. My issue is I live in Bendigo. Not too far from Melb but far enough to be awkward (especially with a couple of young rug rats!! :)) to be able to have a look at a lot of cars and make reasonable offers. Hard to bargain over the phone or email. People get pretty wary of scams these days and and also figure that if you can't get to the car you are just not that interested.

Similar for when I have a car for sale here. I had a really clean Focus a few years ago but just never got any bites as people seem to think Bendigo is too far away, even though it is only 1.5hrs (from centre of melb). Closer than if you were travelling from st kilda to frankston at times!!

I looked up the Dealer for that one you posted. Wapshott motors in Surrey Hills. They have another D5 for sale that was previously listed on carsales but then disappeared.

One conern is that they had there traders licence suspended for 6 months in 2012 in a MCT guarantee fund (Consumer affairs)

Anyone have any info on them?

Consumer affairs may be able to give detail but I don't know. If it was about a warranty dispute, to be honest small dealers are generally not great. I have had issues in the past, and am now with minor problems with my current V50. They just don't like to accept responsibility.

Being in Bendigo is a pain, it often means taking time off work or doing a big day on a Saturday ideally without the kids ☺
