Hi everybody. My 240 wagon with an auto box is idling at about 1000-1100 rpm. If I stop after driving at 100kph for a while, it idles at about 1500 rpm. Further to this, I've noticed the car seems to shaking slightly at idle.
This problem occured a few months ago, but was rectified when our local mechanic installed a new intake manifold gasket. It has, however, started again, and I wonder if it could be a Volvo specific problem?
We have only been in Coffs Harbour a short time, and the mechanic is not a Volvo enthusiast (I don't hold it against him).
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!
Warren.

Probably whatever idle system your 240 system being gummed up and stuck open. What year is your 240?

Likely candidates:
- Throttle body dirty
- Dodgy idle air control valve
- Vacuum leak on intake manifold side (check hoses)
- PCV system clogged
- MAF sensor dirty or dead

It sounds like it may have an air leak, eg: extra air getting in downstream of the throttle body.
Try pinching off all the air and vac hoses one by one with some flat nose pliers, see if the idle drops to help isolate the cause.
It could also be the injector seals or throttle body gasket, you can check these by carefully spraying carby cleaner around them and seeing if the revs change.
The idle adjuster screw on the throttle body (if fitted to your model) may have loosened itself off, or it's O-ring may have failed.
The throttle cable may have become dislodged from it's groove in the spool on the intake manifold, holding the throttle plate open slightly.

What year model is it?
