Stuck in Canberra today but will have a stab at some fitting with mine in the back of my 79 wagon tonight although I suspect a wagon will be a touch more forgiving with fit.

The hole on the reverse side of that tank looks like it's threaded. I wonder how that attached. A threaded rod sticking up vertically from the floor and you rotate the tank onto it!? Doesn't make much sense to rotate the tank vertically because you'd also have to pull the spare out to thread the screw in from the back, but maybe they did!?

They did I think my 164 had a toolbox threaded through the spare in a similar way

Toolbox was a cardboard thing and well wrecked but still have the mounting hardware
