Hi Guys,
Not sure if this is the right place to post so please be kind.
My 2007 c70 has had some vibration/wobble issues for a while, 2 sets of driveshafts later and the problem still persists. Have had wheels balanced, tyres replaced to no avail. Last week while driving in the rain my transmission failed according to the mechanic.
I was at a stop sign and remember the drivers side wheel was on a wet tram track, I accelerated suddenly, the car lurched a bit and remembered feeling the traction control kick in, felt like abs shudder.
After the traffic light turned green, I accelerated to take off and got nothing at all. Nothing in reverse or drive, almost like the transmission had disconnected from the engine! Thank God someone took pity and helped me push it out of the way of the 2 trams behind me!

5 speed or 6 speed trans

Hi Philia Bear,
5 sp geartronic, 90kms daily driver, appreciate your time, am a mechanical noob.

Mmm.
Voldat in Moorabbin are a great workshop.
Berry Motors in Nitcham great also.
Call them.
Car carrier to there.
Has it had regular software updates at Volvo dealer?
Philia_Bear
The 5 speed has insane failure rates
Sounds like it tried to shift and failed and went into fail mode from a faild solenoid
$5k for a Rebuilt trans with a new valve body with upgraded solenoids is what your likely to be up for
VolvoDeger
How did you go with transmission issue?

Hi Guys, it's at the mechanics, indy volvo guy in Coburg Vic.
We've decided on sourcing a second hand trans with low mileage and changing it over. It will work out heaps cheaper than a rebuild plus save a heap of time too.
The car has not missed a service since new! If I'd known there were issues with the trans, I would have steered clear of it. The exact reason I avoided Audi with CVT and alfa with selespeed. Oh well, I suppose Sh1t happens.. Will keep you posted.
I still can't believe it failed so suddenly and without warning.
Philia_Bear
Second hand trans with low km is a really bad choice
Unless it comes with a labour and km warranty you could be back doing the same thing in 6 months and 5000km
Rebuilt and volvo software update is the only option for long term reliability

Mine was rebuilt 40k ago in SA and is leaking a lot already. Damn auto

12 mth warranty on parts/labour, apparently he can get his hands on a trans that's done about 30k. I really had no idea on the reliability issues with this transmission unit. Disappointing, i thought Volvo was for life.

With the upgraded aftermarket solenoids and the volvo updated software they last a very long time

Ok, i'm told a rebuild is not the way to go, that these things are never the same once opened up!! Am confused now. Do you think i should get another opinion before he drops the trans!?
Philia_Bear
If rebuilt by a shop that knows what they are doing its better than new
If rebuilt by a yokal then its never going to be right
You must have a dice unit to reset all the adaptive learning after working on the trans at all
Most shops dont have this or even know to do it

This guy's been working on Volvo's all his life so I have no doubts at all about his mechanical expertise. I know he has access to VADIS scan tool and he's already explained the involved process resetting the adaptive learning.
I'm confident it's in good hands.

Am also now wondering if the Chinese drive shafts that felt wrong from the beginning with wobble/vibration had anything to do with this. Perhaps the vibration caused something else within the transmission to fail.
Chris
Maybe. There is definitely a failure rate in the AW55 but much more so in the P2 XC70, V60/70R, S60 etc.

What I did forget to mention too, a couple of days after I got it home, I started it and shifted from P to D, there was no movement at all but it did feel like the gear engaged AND, when shifting from D back to P, I could hear the park Pawl ratcheting.
