I got a quote from a Volvo dealership for a genuine part that is not available aftermarket. Where is the Volvo 'warehouse' located? And would I get it any cheaper by getting it directly from there?

This is a long shot, but are you able to do VIDA stuff Phillia? Nearest dealership thinks it's reasonable to charge full price labour rates for the time it takes the vehicle to download software. It boggles the mind, what's next? Charging hourly rate to watch the paint dry?

I can do anything diagnostic related and resets using vida but I only do software updates once a year around feb when I can book in 20+ cars in one week and buy a week license from the USA for the week

1 hour minimum for software updates is pretty stock standard, how many hours are they quoting you and which software update are you after?

And don't forget that there is every likelihood that the car will be taking up a service bay that could be used for more lucrative work if the software update wasn't going on.

I've paid before to have an SRS light disabled when I knocked a cable under the seat once... that hurt, but the specialist could tell me the code but not clear it. Cost a pretty penny to clear it, but I knew it was one of those things that the tech could have been doing other work that would take longer.

Its $14k aus per year for a 1 year license of VIDA that lets you work on unlimited cars
When I owned my own Indie shop I was paying it and not blinking twice and If I ever opened one here in aus the same would apply

I was thinking about wasting some money on a Polestar tune, which apparently takes a couple of hours to download. $900 for the software plus $400 in labour. Eek. I'm coming up on my first service interval since buying it, still undecided whether i will do it myself like I have for all my previous cars. 90,000km on a 2011 S60 D5 so there are a few extras to do from my cheat sheet.

Are the software updates really that meaningful? After 5 years I figured they would have everything sorted, if it ain't broke and all that. There's meant to be a ICE update with better Bluetooth but I'm not I'm any rush. If you think it's worth it I'm happy to sign up and chip in for the subscription and your time, though I'm just as happy reading up and doing it with you in shouting distance.

I understand that Volvo's VIDA system is expensive, as I'm sure many other car makers interface systems are, but it's just something you have to pay to operate a Volvo service centre. Rent isn't cheap either. They aren't running a charity and the cost to get a car serviced there reflects that. Calling software installation wait time 'labour' though, rubs me the wrong way.

In terms of taking up a bay, I don't know if Volvo require you to have it on the charger for stuff like VW do but even if it does there is no reason software stuff can't be done in the parking areas out of the way.

My main issue is you can bet that for a long software load the tech is working on another car while yours is doing its own thing, and that work isn't likely to be free either. There is almost guaranteed to be some double dipping going on.

In my line of work, same as any contractor, if you charged 2 customers or projects an hourly rate for the same period of time you would be in some deep poo very quickly. You would consider yourself lucky if you only got fired or had the contract cancelled.

Bottom line yes, VIDA costs money and yes, you expect to pay a premium for having access - markup on software costs for a start, plus time for a tech to do what they need to do - but calling software load time a labour charge billed at $200 per hour is rude at best.

Wish we had something like the VW/Audi RossTech for Volvo, but you can't have everything. Also apologies for the wall of text,.

I should temper my earlier rant a bit by saying that they are actually pretty good from a knowledge and professionalism point. They also slotted me in quite quickly when I wanted my TRM coded in and didn't whinge about not getting paid to physically install the kit like a different one did.

I wonder if dealerships pay the full rate for VIDA or if they get some sort of discount or rebate because they also sell them (and so are required to have it).

I will be getting a Guangzhou special VIDA for diagnostics and changing my DRL settings (which the dealership claimed was impossible, even telling me the manual was wrong). Wouldn't mind doing a tranny flush too.

The vida subscription is pne part of the dealership license that also includes free access to lots of software and other things

Dealership licenses are very complicared contracts
