98 V70 Reverse lights not working

A family friend has just bought a 98 V70, mainly because it was pretty cheap - not sure if she'll end up keeping it or not. Anyway, it failed rego because the reverse lights didn't work. I had a quick look and the bulbs are fine. Is the next suspect the switch in the transmission? How hard is it to replace? (It's an auto by the way.)

I'll likely have a few more questions in the next few days. Car has 250,000km so there are a few things (eg engine mounts, tie rod ends) that I'm told will need doing at some stage.

Will try and get a couple of photos up at some stage too.

The reverse light signal comes from the PNP switch. Definitely worth checking fuses though...

If you can confirm the PNP is the problem I have a near new one I will part with for $20 plus postage.

PNP can be cleaned and repaired very easily
The di-electric grease volvo used is of very low quality and turns hard
This binds the springs that push down on the copper connectors and prevents proper contact to the trace board

Clean everything with carb cleaner making sure to get rid of all the old grease
take some 400 grit sand paper and do a light quick sand on all the copper traces and the connectors
and then use this stuff to re-lube it

I've done this to >100 units now and not one has ever come back

@Philia_Bear thanks for that, looks like it might be the way to go but I'll let you know Rob if I want to buy your switch.

What's the process like for removing / installing it? How long and how hard?

Thanks - looks doable myself - how much time would you budget, a couple of hours?

@Philia_Bear when cleaning the inside of the PNP is it enough to just clean it as you said or do the small springs need to be replaced too?

Also, I noticed that most of the time, the shift selector lock doesn't work properly when it's put into P - it's necessary to jiggle it around to get it to lock. I'm assuming this is also related to the PNP. Is it a sign of something else other than the contacts that can be cleaned? In other words, even if cleaning it fixes the reverse lights, am I better off replacing the whole thing because of the shift lock issue?

The shift lock is a spring and solenoid simple lock that you wilsee when you take out the T-bar unit , easy fix , just break the bloody thing off and don't have the hassle! Or you could lubricates it.

Springs do not need to be replaced just cleaned

Locking issues are near always with the latch button on the front of the shifter
This is the thing you squese into the shifters when you go to shift
When it gets dirty it stops popping out and locks things up

OK, I won't worry about it then.

Is there any temporary fix for the reverse lights, just so the car will pass rego? I read something that suggested moving the shifter back and forth rapidly many times, and that did work but only once. (At least I know it's not a wiring issue as I have seen the lights on now.)

Was planning to do that on Saturday but the rego expires tomorrow so would be good if it can pass rego before it expires.

So I did the PNP switch today.
Reverse lights work fine now.

However there are two new issues. Firstly, the orange up arrow on the dash is flashing and the E and W lights near the gear selector are flashing. The first time I drove the car it was in limp mode, it drives perfectly fine now but those lights are still on. Any ideas?

Secondly, there is a bracket for the dipstick tube that is secured by one of the PNP bolts, and somehow I managed to dislodge the dipstick tube from the actual gearbox when removing the PNP. When I put it back in, it didn't make a perfect seal (I can still jiggle it around slightly). Do I just need to replace the o-ring?

One other thing - I've got no idea where this is meant to go...
