I know by about 1980 or so it's all kjet, but up to then it seems you have a random 20% chance that a 240 will be a carb motor. How did Volvo decide when to use carbs? Was kjet a factory option?
pauljloz
I think it was model related - lower spec = carb though this varied with year. 1982 DL was carb and GL K-jet.

My '77 DL is K-Jet 2.1!
pauljloz
yes (knew that as I typed but 82 is an example) - it changed with year on and off apparently.
I expect carbs were also used to hit price points at times.

My '79 GL is K-Jet, 4 speed gearbox, no A/C, no power steer. Always seemed strange that someone would order one like that.

No cost option on most DL's I think. Let me see if I can dig up sales brochures again.

75-77:
The Volvo 244 DL is fitted with the B 21 A.
The Volvo 245 DL has either the B 21 A or, optionally, the B 21 E.
The Volvo 244 GL has the B 21 E CI fuel injection system and a transistorized
ignition system.

Even that is murky though. I suspect the CKD style of assembly meant that you could more flexibly order perhaps?
Chris
Yep, murky. My family's 1975 244 DL (one of the early full imports) was B21E as were other 244s and 245s at least initially. My memory of the early deliveries is that only the 242 DL came as carby. I have a vague stirring in the back of my mind that carby was manual only in the early days, autos all injected.
A 78 244DL I bought one of my daughters was also injected.

I believe after 1980 only UK imports will be carbied. There is so few left. The 245L was definitely carbied though.

My Australian built 77 244DL is B21 E (referred to as B21E1) on the emissions label.

Is it Aus paint coded or Sweden?
jamesinc
Aus

Rather, there is no paint code at all on the plate, and it lost its dulux colour sticker at some point, but I believe that still points to Australian painted.

Would be interested to ask any of the old factory guys if they did put whatever in whatever to some degree. I know when I investigated the djet to kjet switchover in Aus on the 140's it was literally when they ran out of djet they switched to kjet.

One of the rental car company's had post 80's carbie 240's all white with power steering and a/c
