[SOLVED] - Volvo C70 T5 2007 - Grinding / Knocking on hard right, under power, turn.

Hello,

I've been lurking in the wings for some time, but decided to register and post a question. So... G'Day!

I've been a Volvo nut for as long as I can remember. Started off with a Volvo '72 144, Then a '98 V40T and now a '06 C70 T5.

I'm from the UK originally, and my love affair with Volvo started after sitting in the passenger seat of a Greater Manchester Police Interceptor Squad 850R - My dad was the cop driving at full pelt down the M62.

The C70 is (for me) my dream car. I've wanted one since they first came out in the new shape.
Hard to track down secondhand but managed to find one.

Anyways... It's running well, but when I pull out of a T-junction, turning right, I get a real bad grinding noise, like I'm dragging a metal gate or something.. Defo coming from the drivers side and once I straighten up, the noise does go away.

I've had the wheels off and check the CV / Axle and they all look fine, as do all the other parts.
I strongly suspect the top right Engine Mount. You may disagree?

Where do forum members get their Volvo parts from? I'm in NSW (Wollongong)
I want to buy the left, right and torgue mounts to replace all of them at the same time.

Any advice / Ideas / hints - Most welcome, and Thank you!

They can look just fine and still be dead

The drivers side engine mount just lets the engine sit a little lower when it fails and this would result in vibration all the time and not the specific times your looking at but could cause the noise your describing in addition to the general vibration all the time

The cheapest way to work this out is frequently to pay $35 and have a reputable shop do a pink slip inspection

Just to close the loop on this. It ended up being the Right Hand engine mount. I replaced it with a Mackay RH Engine Mount and the lower Torque mount was replaced with an upgraded e-Focus Mount. (Focus ST / RS / XR5)

The failed mount, and the new one:

Installation was pretty easy and I followed the steps from swedespeed forum for the V50/V40.
The only thing on the C70 was a metal pipe that restricted access to a bolt on the Lower Rear mount:

Removing some bolts to lower this pipe only took a few minutes and it's obvious which screws to remove to drop the pipe enough to get access.

Changed the Oil while the car was on ramps. Getting the damn filter cap off took longer than BOTH the engine mounts. I've not changed the left pad, it was fine (as was the torque) but I wanted to change the torque mount anyway for the "upgraded" part.

C70 is back to cornering like it's on rails with no knocks / scrapes! I can finally turn right without curling my toes and screwing up my face each time!

Just had the a-arms and the top engine mount done on my C70. Hopefully mine will be cornering well too.
By the way, someone had "repaired" the top engine mount with liquid nails!

What were the focus engine mounts worth?

I got them from a local South Coast NSW stockist, but I think they were Transgold supplied. It was $75 for the eFocus Mount.

I've seen on many forums that they help with "clunky shifts" in the C70. Mine was running OK anyway so figured I'd throw the new part on. The removed Torque mount still looked ok, but can tell straight away the eFocus is much stiffer. Best of all, it's a direct bolt on.

Just re-read my own post. Apologies, the Engine mount is Volvo Spec (Mackay OEM Part), the Lower Torque is only the Focus one.

Edited the original to avoid confusion down the track :)

The Transgold parts I ordered for future reference are:

Rear lower - The "arm" with three mount points - Transgold TEM2936
Right Hand Engine Mounts - Transgold TEM2942 (I ordered this but got a Mackay, so not sure on the Mackay part number, it was swapped by the supplier)
Rear Steady / Rear Lower - Transgold TEM3171 (The Focus ST Upgraded part)

The XR5 and Focus ST share the same B5254 engine. (Of course being a P1 chassis)
