Volvo 850 - Stuck Valve?

My 850 recently developed a ticking sound in the valve train (louder than usual). This noise would go away after the engine warmed up. I figured I had a stuck lifter, so I changed the oil and tried some 'lifter-free' additive, which happens to smell a lot like kerosene. Anyway, after about 100 km, I don't think that really helped, but now, the car is making a new noise. It comes and goes, and it sounds like a soft, muffled popping back through the throttle, as far as I can tell. And from memory, there was a bit of a fuel smell about the engine bay. I'm thinking worst case is that I've bent an intake valve and it's getting stuck.

I will post up a video tomorrow, but I'm curious if anyone else has had these symptoms on their car?

Solved it. The noise wasn't coming from the throttle hose, it was coming from the disconnected vacuum line underneath, which runs between the manifold and evap canister. :)

Ha! Ye need to replace all the hoses. After this long they are going to fail from age.
Iirc the fix for the ticking can be sump O rings replacement inside , the oil pump or soaking the valve gear in kero for a week to clean it.

Yeah, and those old hoses leave a nasty mess on your hands too. I've got the replavement o-rings, but I'm going to get all my ducks in a row and replace a lot of stuff in one go, when I get a chance. Would it be worth getting new lifters, or do they usually clean up fine?

@Philia_Bear can help with the lifters Q as i dont know , i have only played with different oils to try to help , found that mineral oil is best for whiteblocks , or semi - synthetic. Thats years of whiteblocks , many cars. I used to go Mobil ! all the time but Penrite syn or Repco ( made by Penrite 0 syn or semi is good.

Soak lifters in cheap and thin atf for a weak
Then clean and flush a few times using carb cleaner
Then soak again

They dont wear out, they just get clogged with junk

Only oil in an 850 should be penrite hpr10 full syn year round changed every 5-10k or 6 months
