Does anyone know:
1. If I buy a motorhome from another state and transfer rego to NSW - does the RTA weigh it to check it's under the weight limit, that still qualifies to be driven on a car licence? (My concern is, people screw on all sorts of extras, raising the weight of the vehicle.)
2. I was also wondering does the 'house' section even count in the total weight? Because two things:
a) The house section must be removable to replace the engine (right!?). But then again, it wouldn't be a motorhome in the RTA's eyes if it were just 'sitting' on the back of a truck. The reason I'm getting confused is because I often see the same trucks - without any motorhome, just a tray on the back - and the weight is still just below 4.5 tonne. i.e. Adding a frame, walls, stove, microwave, aircon, shower, toilet, sink, matresses... how does all that stuff weigh the same as a bare truck!? (Do they weigh it with as many the extras as possible removed?)
3. I've been told seatbelted seats now have to face forward in NSW to comply. What happens if I buy a motorhome from another state, with seatbelted seats that face backwards, or sideways? Does the RTA just say, "Oh well, it was complied over there back in 198x, so we just transfer and accept it the way it is too..."? Or do they reduce the legal number of seats?

Seems to be a question for a phone convo with the RTA. It can be impossible to decipher those road traffic websites. Easily done by phone...as long as the wait isn't too long.....

Well, I would... but I've walked into two different branches before, to simply ask what was the maximum vehicle weight you could drive on a car license. Neither could answer. Considering they couldn't answer that simple question, I expect these ones would make their heads implode. But if no-one here knows, I'll probably have to risk it, LOL.

4499kg is the max gross weight; 4500kg is LR for NSW.
Hope that helps a bit

At least you may find a superior who knows if you ring up. The front of house staff are there cos they can handle customer abuse and general duty. Good luck. But I must say I go in with a cheery attitude , smile and be cordial , it seems to be rare for them so they bend over backwards , I get good peeps in my limited business with em.

Nsw will take the weight from the blue slip paperwork
The blue slip guy will just use the weight from the previous registration paperwork
The seatbelts must meet nsw requirements
But... it just depends on how many seats are listed on the compliance plate or paperwork
You can have extra seats facing reward with belts and be fine if say its registered as a 2 seater and both front seats have belts

No, the rear section is not usually removable to access the motor on a truck, it becomes a fixed cab if it is a walk through type. If it has an area above the roof, it will most likely also not be tiltable and the is access panels inside the truck.
4500kg gvm is for Vic also, so if you get a 2t Tray truck and fit it out, you will easily hit 2000kg of weight in the rear, remember, caravans aren't light either!
