How to choose used xc90?

My wife and I are really keen on the xc90 d5, new to thinking about volvo, and trying to work out what we should be looking for.
We've driven 3. One was amazing, 2012, just felt and sounded great. The other two are 2011s and they drove like a dodgy bus.
My question, is the that much difference between 11 and 12 models or is it luck of the draw?
There are good looking cars interstate. We're in nsw but lots more used D5 in Victoria. If I could find the secret to what makes the good ride, I'd probably go there.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated

@Philia_Bear is the expert, and he will tell you that you are making a good choice with the D5 (there are petrol models to definitely avoid). He can also advise on typical things to check re: engine + suspension, etc.

No difference
The twin turbo d5 came out in 09 so everything post 09 is mechanicaly the same

That Said, a fair number have had the polestar tuning software put onto them which make a noticeable difference in response while not increasing power

Also it can just come down to how they have been abused with lots of short city driving

Sounds like the usual flogged out front end?
Buy the one you like best in looks and condition at cheapest rate.
Factor in new front suspension consumables (which will need done on any of them no doubt) get a Polestar tune (or other in that market) and have it how you want.

Thanks very much everyone. I have been wondering if the one I like was chipped. Didn't have a badge but the engine growled a lot compared to the others. Sounded totally different

Also, if anyone knows a good mechanic in Melbourne that they trust to check out an xc90 for me, that would be great.
The dealer is talking about voldat who look good but I'd like to have a local that isn't recommended by the dealer.

This is interesting the misses likes the XC90 and is looking for an upgrade soon. I'm not sure about the Australian market and the accuracy of wikipedia but the link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_XC90 mentions that in 2012 there was a power increase of 9 kw's and 20 nm torque for the D5.

Any xc90 your looking at you should want to plug a volvo dice unit into and get a full output of everything wrong with it

totally agree and get a print out to show the seller
