String. He showed me his string, it was paracord. He said it's good as it's smooth surface.

Okay so minor rage moment. Finally finished up the sweet install of the 6x9s on the parcel shelf, when I realised that the parcel shelf setup on the '77 244DL was different with seatbelt retractors on the left and right side. Later model 240s evidently tucked them further into the pillar.

So do you have to move the speakers, or is the parcel shelf the wrong size?

Well it looks like the seat belt retractor will fit next to the speakers, but the shroud will partially cover the speakers.

Maaaan I am quite upset about this parcel shelf. It is a damn clean parcel shelf and I can't see a way to fit the seatbelts without ruining it.

Can you move the speakers slightly towards the middle without noticing it from the top? Or fit earlier non retracting seatbelts?

I think the earlier seatbelts would be a compliance issue. The speakers need to move about 20-30mm further away.

I think I might have to do some fabricating. I can mount the seatbelt retractor, but I will need to fashion a shroud to go over it and hide where I've had to cut the parcel shelf.

The alternative is to get some MDF and make my own parcel shelf.

12mm MDF for stiffer shelf , fit it on top of this one? Blend in and cover.

I did that exact setup on my 1985 240 when I was 17. Was great for the acoustics too.

I know a 75 242 doesn't have retractable rear belts, nor does a 76 245. I dare say you're safe fitting early belts. Unless you want inertia reel in the back which invariably strangle everyone...

Ah. I see. I sort of thought you may have wanted to be a bit 'period original', etc so understand why you may have wanted to stay with the OG style.

I actually cant remember the difference. My 240 hadnt had rear seatbelts or seat since maybe 2004 (possibly earlier)

Yeah I will try and do period original. I still have the original rear shelf, maybe I can re-upholster it.

It's finished. There's a couple of minor things to sort out, like the fog lights, and the dash dimmer, but I took it around the block. It's beautiful. I almost cried.
