Ash I have a line on an awd s40 What would you think about making the only awd focus Xr5 in aus?

By logic I meant inputs from steering wheel and yaw sensors to pre empt the need for awd, I'm sure I've felt it working this way on a particular hill & corner I drive often near my place.

A couple of posts in another thread turned into some constructive thought and discussion around converting a vehicle on the P1 platform to AWD.

Thinking about a building a Frankenstein C30 T5 AWD or LS-LV Ford Focus XR5 AWD, this may very well be the place to look .

It'd involve an S40 or V50 AWD donor car, but might just be what you need to read to build the gripped-up pocket-rocket of your dreams.

C30 Polestar is one of the few Polestar variants that is actually REALLY impressive.
Definitely need the Polestar front guards for it!

Blame volvo as the system is really just designed for low traction environments like snow or mud

I thought gen 1 and 2 Haldex were reactive and gen 3 onwards are proactive having the electric pump pre -pressurising the system

Gen 3 can just turn on and lock while car is at a stand still, that does not mean it turns it on if you say try to launch it... it requires that there has been detected slip within the last 10-15 seconds to engage

Weird, if I hit this steep corner at speed and turn in hard I don't get any inside front tyre spin at all and it feels like the rear had become activated

I’m going to revive an old thread here as this is a project I’ve spent the last 2 ½ years researching and is very near and dear to my heart. Ash knows me from the XR5 Forum and my obsession with LV XR5’s and AWD platforms.

Over that time I’ve bought two TE Kuga stats, wrecked & rebuilt at least a dozen XR5’s, rebuilt a stat Focus RS MK2 as a track car and last year picked up a S40 T5 AWD 6sp repairer in the name of research. I also have a seriously built forged T5 engine that last time it ran made nearly 500hp and is about to go to the engine builder again to get more work done.

I’ve spent 100’s of hours searching the net looking at Volvo’s, Focus’s, Audi’s and anything remotely related to gain an insight in how to make this work. I have most of the parts required with the last few turning up this first quarter 2017 and then hopefully I can start the build. I’ve got a detailed build spec I’m working to and at the moment I’m down to two main issues that need resolving – fuel pump control module + sender units for fuel gauge, and a rear LSD.

All sounds awesome. Just not sure how it gives a better outcome than just modifying an AWD S40/V50.

It'll go into an XR5.

I hear ya about being easier in the S40, especially since I have one. But I like the shape of the XR5 and I'm a bit of a Ford fan so that's the weapon of choice. Besides I like a challenge.

Ahh, unfortunate. From reading, I get the impression that it's a bolt up affair from an AWD S40 donor. No new floors or mounting points? And then controlling the on/off haldex with a few wheel speed sensors?
It's probably alot more complex than that in real life though!

It's not as hard as you think if you mix n match the right parts. It's been done in Russia in a 2009 Focus ST. In short, M66C gearbox, Kuga transfer case and tailshaft, Kuga or S40 AWD front crossmember, Kuga rear diff incorporating the Gen IV Haldex, S40 AWD rear crossmember and hubs and S40 axles. To run the Haldex you only have 5 wires, two of which are from the HS CAN network. To do it simply just splice into the HS CAN network to pick up the signals the Haldex will use in it's module to provide lock to the clutches. You do need a Kuga ABS unit which is calibrated differently to accommodate the AWD and the yaw sensor under the drivers seat.

I've got everything to do it in an XR5, but then just today bought a MK2 RS as it will be so much easier with the extra width. Plus you get the Revo knuckle front end. I've bought lots of parts to do the conversion, including an EMU Black ECU and the ECU Master Haldex controller so I can set the amount of lock to the rear. Now I have the base car I'm hoping to get started in earnest and make this myth a reality.
