Hi guys looking at picking up a 2004 forester xt auto this week , I had a manual na forester new in 07 and was a good car , does anyone know of any problems with the turbo in auto form ? I know it's slower than the manual but it's mainly for a runabout so just needs to be reliable

2.0 = fine, 2.5 = run away
That seams to be the rule for that generation of scuby
Standard things to look for are if its had the trans fluid flushed at least once every 100k

Had new engine block and head gasket replaced 26000 km ago has done 154000 total , also has a transmission cooler as it has been used to tow a motorbike trailer , perfect condition , moon roof leather racks snow chains
$6500 full service history with Subaru
Philia_Bear
is it a 2.5? if so its another HG failure waiting to happen....
morgan
All xt are 2.5 2002 to 2013 here's a couple on car sales with 300000km so a replacement 26000 km ago should be ok for a couple of years
Philia_Bear
Depends on what kit they used and how good a job was done
Could already be failing
2.5s are to be avoided
morgan
Not sure what kit but it was done at Subaru dock lands

Rach (my lady friend) had an 04 non turbo and that thing sucked big time. Granted hers wasnt a very good example of one, but it still sucked. It was slow as all hell, rattled like a mofo and was just in general a bad car. It also did the HG but from what I understand it hadnt been changed yet so was one of the factory fail ones. I'm told the updated kits dont fail so often and that you can get copper ones that dont fail as often.
I agree with Mike though that the EJ25 is fail. EJ20 is a good thing, EJ25 is not so much.

I say get great xc70 , employ Jeremy to swap it to manual.

Its been done by docklands subaru, go ahead as it will have been done right.

Took a 2005 Honda Odyssey for a test drive tonight , luxury model very impressed , nice to drive 7 seats and goes ok to .
I may have found my daily
Philia_Bear
Does it have the aw55?
morgan
Yes and just googled 2004 odyssey transmission ... So now strike that off the list also ! Running out of options , may have to be 2000 2.0 forester gt

Feedback I've had from owners who are spirited drivers are to make sure the brakes and handling are to your taste first (the GT).

The 240 is for the spirited driving ! This is to ferry the kids around in

Slightly off topic, but Q about the 2.0 diesel forester. What known problems? I am told the 2.5 petrol has a known issue with one cylinder head gasket going, but otherwise OK. Probably 2011 or newer, for the wife. Time to give the 2006 X-trail the flick for a new vehicle (and if anyone interested in a one owner X-trail 40th anniversary edition 195,000km, new head and cams - PM me).
Philia_Bear
Never heard about any issues with the diesel
The 2.0 Petrol Turbo's seam fine as well
