Gents,

I'm after your experiences on the different engine builders around.

I need valve guides installed, seats ground a hot tank and maybe a machine (B234). I used to take my work to Bavarian Motor Works in Taren Point, but they stopped doing any internal jobs several years ago (apparently they've started doing it again). The last head I had done (B6304S) went to LW Parry in Arncliffe. They charged my $480 ish (from memory) after they had quoted me $400 over the phone. What they were supposed to do was: grind, lap the valves hot tank, pressure test, bleed the lifters (a wank, I know, but it was "included in the service") and assemble. They did all of that without doing the lifters and the head came back with areas of carbon not removed and swarf all through the cooling passages. As expected, not happy.

So, who has used who? What did you get done? How much were you charged? Good/bad?

I had some bike heads done at CDA in dee why. I think it ended up being about 150 to clean, weld up a crack in the plug socket and machine a rooted bearing surface. Really nice guys, managed to get it done quickly despite them being super busy getting summernats motors done when I went and really happy with the quality of the work

Parry do good work but are pricey. There 2 engineering shops in Crowsnest/St Leonards. I have used Leon's, he is ok. Have heard good things about the other.

I used the services of KVK Engine reconditioning (Yennora NSW) 1.5 years ago, all new valve stems installed, crack tested, hot tanked and head machined (flatness). $350 all in, they did a great job and quick turn around (two days).

I use Thornleigh Cylinder Heads. They do really good work. I think @Slowbrick can attest to their ability to clean up a thoroughly rooted cylinder head.

I'd still strongly recommend Mal and Kim Baker of Baker Precision Engines (who are out past Orange, in Molong these days) but the last time they built an engine for me was 20+ years ago.

The workmanship was excellent and the engine they built never missed a beat for as long as I owned that car.

The head did come back very clean, but I am thinking something is not quite right with it. On overrun the car blows blue smoke and has started doing it on idle. The turbo was rebuilt and nearly zero shaft play. This leads me to believe the valve guides/seals havent been installed correctly. I'm not saying it is the head but I cant be sure it isnt.

Other than that the work done was very good.
