Giles Very nice summary of your C107 Grumpy. I miss my 350SLC and one day I'll have another, but the amount of Merc's that I've has with problematic Djet systems I might aim a bit next gen. Are you familiar with the 500SLC? This was my old 350SLC I mockup for the national MB Rally in WA a few years ago.
Anthony Enjoyable read, about a lovely era of quality SLC sports tourers. D Jet was the first era of solid state electronics for fuel injection, but soon after mechanical K-Jet took over as performance was better as well as mpg, until full EFI reappeared as technology matured. I love reading the Merc Enthusiast magazine each month myself. If i owned a EFI D-Jet SL, I would slip in a aftermarket computer to control the system to modern standards and no one would even know. Have the small SLK 320 V6 myself.
Oppolock Ta Giles, its a work in progress. I have a boot full of parts, seals etc and I have a good stock of both 350 and 450 D jet parts from known working ECU's, Timer/temp sensors, injectors, refurbished AAV's and MPS units that are tested and within spec as I find the stuff is getting hard to find. Anthony id argue that D jet lacks power (Economy sure lol) when its running right and even tweakable on both Benzes and early 6 Volvo's but if you want full diag with laptop access then sure, K jet with FrankenCIS from DKUBUS is an evil evil option. The Bosch Djetronic was used as late as 1979 under license to Lucas (Lord of Darkness) in the V12 S II Jags and Daimler Double 6 and is a really nice, simple EFI system. Sure the manifold pressure sensor AF metering isnt precise compared to AFM tech but its pretty good for the time.
Oppolock Ex850R;84568 wroteNice pix and good write-up you blokes! Love an old Benz! Les you really want to read Giles thread on his Red 2 door on OzBenz mate, lots of piccies, very in depth and extremely well written.
Oppolock Well life got busy but the old girl is dry as a nuns nasty in my shed and half the paint is stripped, all new parts now cattledogged and in the boot and some nice airtight cases. I am about to buy some bits from the US for her and I need to acquire some battery cable crimp tools and supplies as well. I Dropped the oil last week and removed the filter cart and left her to drain for a week and this morning filled her with some GTX 20/40 I had laying about and popped in a new filter (I have a carton of the cartridges JIC), Dropped a nice big Calcium wet battery in and cranked her over till oil came up to spec. Hooked the coil up and fired her up to find only half the cylinders where firing properly so I suspect the dual pickup on the bottom of the distributor is dirty or the pickup shagged so she wouldnt run worth a damn. Old Mercs do NOT like sitting about idle so this was expected and im seriously thinking engine/trans out now so I can just go through and replace seals and gaskets etc. it was nice to sit in her, and she is still registered but its time to finish the job.
