I think it was mentioned last month after the Bruce thread got hijacked (again) into a discussion about 4wd's that it was probably a good idea to have a whole thread, and having just seen a post about the Hyundai Terracan in another thread, I thought it was a good idea to start this off...

I had a '67/9 International Scout (Aussies got old model for some years I think) twas a project started by another. It sat in a farm carport off side of shed for a while then behind mates place outdoors in Warrnambool then in my garage of tennanted house there.....they were happy about that... Family , they can suck it up...
In a fit of madness I sold it to a sparky I worked with on the power station job at Mortlake.
He needed it for shooting! Perfect , drop down windscreen , take doors off etc. Old Ford 250 motor hooked up to Scout box with that performance shop for V8s made , Castlemain I believe.
Teared up as it wnet off up the road the wrong way in our one way street.....
Could been great , body dropped onto an HQ Tonner chassis and a 350 dropped in...

I looked at a 2003 Pajero exceed 7 seater leather etc , but am scared of running costs I think I will wait for a diesel , but there always lower spec :(

Oops , I was thinking for Darren being an inner west inhabitant a truck like that would be wasted plus the service costs as in wearing out the 4wd bits plus service costs on diesel motor compared to the Honda Odysee I mentioned which has load lugging ability and cheap to run.

Bro has an older Pajero , insists on wasting cash on it , the motor isn't great (V6 on gas) , when I dove it I couldn't believe how 1950s it felt in all aspects......

Shoguns are alrgight - wife's uncle had one that he bought new in 1996ish, and ran for 160,000miles or so without ever servicing it. I'm not sure that the new ones are quite as tough as those are, but they're not bad.

They tend to be a bit of a marmite car; some love them, others hate them.... what is telling is that here they are used as the marked and unmarked cars - a bit like how the HATOs used them... I'm a believer in that they tend to use something for a reason.

What puts a lot of people off of them is that they aren't a Toyota or Nissan with a 4 litre plus engine, and that there is a lot of confusion about the chassis - I always thought that that shape had gone monocoque, but in fact it's a hybrid chassis/body set up. Add in that they are IFS/IRS, when most things that are IFS/Live rear axle or Live front/rear.

Comfort wise, the IFS + coil rear is a lot more comfortable than some of the options; best bet is to drive some, and ideally get onto dirt roads to see how they ride. Suspension set up makes a really big difference - we ride a lot better with the EFS shocks than we did with the flogged out stock stuff - but the different aftermarket options available all make a difference in a different way.

Our '02 Pajero has been good to us. 280,000km, doesn't use oil, drives nicely. Fuel consumption varies from 10.5 (easy country driving) to 18.5l/100km (car trailer and rally service gear).

It's also the most car like of the big 4WDs. I still hate 4WDs, but I can tolerate the Paj. Seats are shit - they feel fine, but give me a sore arse after about an hour and a half. Most Volvo seats let me go for at least six hours plus.

Noisy lifters (it's a Mitsi...), clunky trailing arm bushes (semi-common apparently), not much else to complain about.
All the research we did, says that diesel motors and auto trans were the only common sources of grief: we bought a petrol manual.

Incorrect as I keep saying, they only need a fuel filter changed more often than a petrol, you should do oil changes on both petrol and diesel every 10,00km, especially in the city.

Yeah , I think I will give up on that shpeil.
Peeps never listen anyway but I usually reserve it for when a lady wants to buy a Craptiva or some diesel but I know for sure it will do the shopping and school run , won't get serviced and WILL cost a bomb to fix at a later date and they can't afford it....
