215/40/17 is quite good. I ran them on my 850T5 which was quite low and didnt have any scrubbing issues.

What tyre was it Ash? I think I tried some too that size , so many I tried! Non helped the rampant power but it was fun!
AshDVS
215/40/17 kumho ecsta supra something.
It was a while ago - 2006 perhaps?
jamesinc
My 850 sits lower at the front than that. It's like, the thickness of your hand between the bottom of the guard and top of the tyre, so 15-20mm.
AshDVS
It was about the same then. This pic was taken just as it rolled out after doing springs and shocks, but before being driven on. IIRC about 20mm.
Weitec springs and Bilstein B6 shocks.

I looked at James car, I think there is a difference in the spring seat height on Koni strut verse the Bilstien Touring that are running in my car. My car sits significantly higher. Thus they are acting a little bit like a coil over.
So when the original 850R springs are used, the ride height drops a bit. That and running 215/45/17.
I guess the only way to confirm is measure the Struts on an original 850R, the touring , and the Koni. Did the 850R use the stock 850 strut?
Ex850R
Yes , the R did use STD 850 strut and yes the Koni's do sit lower , i had them on the R and then moved them to two other cars , an S70T5 and V70T and i really notice how low they are compared to my current V70T with Billies bothe ends , it looks too high! It also contributes to them being harsh too.....Should be able to run 215/45/17 with a little rub , check that the steering restrictor stops still have the teflon on them ( easy to see looking under at the front of the wheel or with wheel off ) Use maybe 10mm spacers ? It should stop rub on inside.

Yes Les ...James car is chewed up under there. The wishbone stops are there. His strut tops are good. So springs or Billies? After what you said I'm thinking the 850R springs are unsuitable for the Koni. Personally I'm not a fan of spacers.
Ex850R
Blisteins for more comfort or OEM Sachs ones Ash recomends them as the most comfortable , the springs will be fine and if spacers are not wanted then its 205/50/!7 ( up from 45 aspect for a bit more comfort and better tyre chooice than 45%...) tyres , Michelin Pilot Sprt 3 are what i am using now and they are miles better than RE002s my all time fave tyre. Ash is after Koni's so maybe talk to him James for swaps?
AshDVS
All the 850 models as far as I know use the Sachs strut from standard, 'Sports suspension' in the R models is increased spring rate and shorter free length as well as larger dia swaybar.
For general use, the Sachs are quite good and offer a long life.
We need to be a little careful with shocks and springs as a lot of the information on the web is US-sourced. However, Australian cars are essentially european spec cars so as a result we got 'real' R & T5R models rather than watered-down cars that the US market received.
This is visually really noticable when someone posts a pic of a 'stock' V70R on a site look Volvospeed - the ride height looks closer to an XC than an R model.
We talk a different language with shocks too. Models available in the US aren't necessarily the same as what is offered locally.

Update: I rolled out a small kink in the guard lip that was causing all sorts of havoc with the tyres, so the main crunch has now gone. I also swapped the fronts to 205/45R17 Kumho KU31 tyres and the scrub at lock seems to have gone away. Thanks for the input!
Rob
Can i ask what the Kumhos are worth?
Ex850R
Do they come in 205/50/17?
Rob
jamesinc
$110/wheel, give or take depending on the size you want.
Rob
:-?

Good to hear that the scrub is reduced. Tossed these up against the Momos you saw. One word of advice don't go run flats.
jamesinc
I like my tyres simple. I have a can of stop leak and mini compressor in the boot.
CamZH
wow, didnt realise the 205 were so cheap.
I went for 215's on my 850 (also KU31's)
I'm very happy with the KU31's
They are a big improvement on the plastic junk I had on there before
nickm
My only comment is the KU31 is a bit noisy I have them on the S40. On the 850 I went for 2 Momo M3 (new here) not bad bang for the buck. Better than the run flat dunlop sp01 on the rear
