How would I go about hiding it? Do I have to paint over it?
Remove the tail light and trim. Chip out and sand the rust and loose paint, put some rust converter on, sand, fill, sand, prime and paint. It will take a few hours and you will need to get some paint matched from Super Cheap or similar. To do that, take the fuel door in as a sample.
I fixed rust under the quarter windows on my 144, and it was done over 3.5 days in between working split shifts, as I had to wait for the rust converter to try and also each layer of filler and paint to dry. I wasn't expecting it to take so long, but those 20 to 30 minutes between each job add up.
Also check around the windows of the cargo area too, that is where all 140 and 240 wagons rot out, as the sill is dished inwards instead of out, water and dirt gets trapped under the rubber seals there. Same goes for pre 1990 cars around the windscreen and on sedans the back window.
