It sounds like somebody took all the "good bits" at some stage, leaving you with a bit of a shopping list!

Looks like a nice car, with a lot of potential.

The Turbo+ electronic boost controller can be a bit problematic from what I've seen, I'd just fit a simple manual boost control valve instead, set it to something sensible and enjoy.

Perhaps, Either way its not a bad driver and the turbo does what it is supposed to do when it is supposed to do it even with an Auto behind it.

There is a cheapy Boost valve there, was screwed up a fair way which was interesting but not seat slammingly high which made it twitchy on dirt and wet roads if you were not paying attention because of course the temptation is to give it a few more clicks than last time lol

I have to say though that Volvo's compression ratio being a bit higher than usual with high pressure turbo's makes the lag negligible and is a smart smart move as I thought the thing would be a dog off boost.

I'll tidy it till I get around to painting the thing.

RWC work next, doesnt need much but theres a few things I want to do anyway.

First job was to remove the blanket from the underside of the bonnet, saggy and soaked in oil above the PCV riser tube its now just a fire hazzard.

A mate kindly dropped me off an AW shifter assy so I can fit the PRND2L and indicator assy and light and adjust the Park/Neutral inhibitor with other trim bits on the way.

Silicone Vac hose reel still not here yet and the washer nozzles, Tee Pieces and filter I forgot to source so thats waiting on parts, Replaced the wipers with Bosch whole head units I had in stock.

Dash need to come out as well as the factory boost is leaking and the hose will be replaced anyway plus Im going to add a Tee Piece and run a line for a more accurate boost guage anyway so I can shut off the in dash unit at a later date or if CBF sets in Ill just run a new line to the car and plug it for the time being as its just another potential Vac leak which plays havoc with the 740's anyway.

After that im doing the flame trap assy along with the hose to the trap etc to see if I can bring the crankcase pressure down and failing that I'll do the oil trap as well PITA that it is.

The headlining was stripped out by the PO leaving the card in place so im thinking about vacuuming the foam off as its degraded and simply painting the card to tidy it, I have sourced a nice headlining but getting it out nice and refitting it will take time and as always with interior plastics they never seem to stay whole after being in situ for years so it can wait.

Have to refit a radio to fill the hole as well although im tempted to just buy a Din cup holder assy instead as I tend to listen to the car over music and use my Windows phone for Music via soundcloud, TuneIn or FLAC and id just mount an Amp under the seat for that anyway.

Then its Roadworthy and Club Permit!

No need to pull the dash out to access the vac hose for the gauge, you can reach up behind the cluster and access it that way. There may be a couple of vac hoses there, most 740T's also have an overboost pressure switch on or near the pedal box, with a vac hose going to that.

You can get the headliner out by removing the front passenger seat, laying the driver's seat right back, and it'll go out the LHF door. Getting all the trims around the edges of the roof, pillar trims etc. off is pretty time consuming though.

Ta Angus, I figured the front passenger was the best bet.

Im thinking of cleaning it in situ and reupholstering it in the car as the trim will be a huge PITA as you mentioned.

I vacuumed a headlining works fine.

There is a t peice and stock gauge is relatively accurate, I run my gauge off the t peice and bypass the sensor.

The stock exhaust makes the real difference to feeling like a turbo car vs a bigger engined car. The exhaust is too small. 2.75 or 3" upgrade asap

Sounds like a Plan re the Tee Piece and headlining, id think the overboost sensor would be disconnected anyway considering the cars history too.

And yes re the bigger Zorst, probably stainless although even a cheapy off the rack unit would do for now to let the old girl breathe.

Been looking at refurb and upgrade bits for the turbo as well just coz and theres some interesting stuff available.

I would throw out the crappy pre 90 manifold and just put a ported 90+ on there with a td04 of whatever flavour you want. Better boost response mostly due to the poor flow on the early manifold.

I don't know of any off the shelf exhausts that are larger than stock. Stainless is a waste of money imo, it doesn't sound as good and honestly, in Australia. Normal exhausts don't really rust unless its a short trip car.

For rust I agree the stainless isnt worth it but I found that the stock lengths of rolled hollow exhaust seem to vary in quality and give way at the seams, I used to buy 6 meter lengths to fab up systems and the quality seemed to be all over the shop so I went to stainless for consistancy even though the stuff is softer.

As for bigger turbo's the higher than usual compression on the redblocks concerns me a bit and I dont want to put a leg out of bed so Ive resisted the temptation to get a bigger turbo for now, My familiarity lies more with Z18 nissans and SR20DET's both of which have significantly lower compressions (And more lag plus fun with anti lag) and I really dont want to blow this thing up straight away.

Might have a look at the manifolds when I do the base gasket and see if I cant mill some out for the time being eh?

You wont. They run quite rich and are not that high a compression ratio. Ive been running 16+ psi on a td04 16t with a ported 90+ for 5 years/100,000km with my engine issue. Yld244 has a stock internals 95 940 b230ft with a gt35r and motec and it survives too. I don't even have bigger injectors, just running a colder plug and a tad more ignition timing. I tow abs everything with it. So no, you won't put a leg our of bed if you size the injectors and ignition timing right.

Keep in mind they dont flow as well as a twin cam 16v sr too.

LOL No they do not which is why I like the redblocks kinda, prehistoric, solid and plenty of base to play with.

You also answered my concerns about the mix leaning off too much.

Tempted to play with cam timing as well but that can wait for a new cam.

The t cam makes torque down low and that's about it. try to go for a ipd or kg2t, the A or K is not particularly worth it in my experience.
