You can tune these ECUs yourself. Have a look at

Even if you don't actually tune the ECU, it enables heaps of datalogging, which is great if you are trying to track down a problem. This is what the screen looks like:

You can see long and short term fuel trims (which can be a good indicator of vacuum leaks), MAF data (good to make sure your MAF isnt maxxing out or playing up), injector duty cycle (make sure your injectors arent maxxing out), and engine detected knock (the column on the right - good to monitor to prevent damage when tuning).
Also, if you get a wideband, it is easy to adjust your fueling.
