I have a feeling the only AWD S40s are T5. If so, banned for P drivers except, oddly, some later T5 R Design models. Otherwise totally agree.

Its a matter of driving to the conditions and the car Forg plus I trust the girl.

I have a 1971 Valiant Utility, 4 wheel Drum brakes with torsion bar suspension and a bolt action 3 on the tree, It is bog stock standard and I like it that way, it is also fairly quick with roughly 150 HP at the skinny rear wheels.

I did drive it a fair bit for a while there but understood its limitations on wet roads and drove accordingly because if I drove it like my V40t id be in brown undies all day long, and its the same with my Rangies.

I'd take two guesses at why:
(a) power-to-weight makes the R-Design ones heavier, hence allowed (unlikely given no AWD).
(b) someone actually bothered to enquire about whether the S40 should be an exception based on it not being all that fast (and the FWD is different enough to the AWD that they didn't make the exception of the older ones as well).

Oh, absolutely, but that doesn't mean a 20+yo Rangie is as safe as a new Corolla; you can drive to the conditions in both, but unexpected emergencies still happen, and if you trust her then it's these unexpected emergencies that you're catering for anyway.

You can apply for an exemption in Vic for low pressure turbo's and I checked using my S 1.5 V40t and its a bit of paperwork and all done.

And at 100 kph all bets are off and a small very safe car has limits.

Short of sending her out in a Leopard tank we will be a bit nervous for a few weeks at least I guess and will have to get over it and hope like hell it all works out

LPTs like your S40T yes, but not the S40 T5 - it's in the banned category not exemption required, except the 2010 onward R Design, which is approved.

Being nervous is part of the deal. I still worry about my older kids on long trips and they are well past probationary.

I've been considering handing the keys of the 2003 XC90 over in my case as the 82 244 is getting a little unreliable.

Based on the current market for them not far of the 5K mark. Just find one well maintained.

I'd agree bigger is better on those roads so even this maybe an option if you can pick up a T5 that's got good history with an independent. (Sadly an SA #$*#$% service history usually means 15k oil changes, lifetime trans fluid and never checking AWD for leaks).

Driven them in Snow a few times (Old ones without the W button) and they are surprisingly good.
The thing that lets them down is Aussie tyres but a good set of snow tyres and theyd be reasonable.

I got snow a few times in Cockatoo driving the back was from Emerald down Paternoster Road which was right on the snowline and because of the gradient it was scary and the Rangie was better suited but the old 240 4 speed wagon held its own

Been a bit slack in the Update Dept but earlier this month she (We) went and had a look at a 2003 AWD Magna Sport, 220k with Reg and Roadworthy.
Settled on $3550 and the deal was done.

Apart from a few annoying details the car is actually a lot of fun, everything works well and the 3.5 V6 and 5 speed auto is surprisingly well mated and the AWD system seems to be very bloody smart.

I have driven it on dry and wet/greasy sealed roads and this morning on the way back from dropping the kid off at work I took a shortcut down Berrys creek road for a run on the dirt and some tight narrow tarmac.

I am very impressed and using the sports shift to pick the gear I find the thing is an weapon on dirt although with it not being my car I was nice to it.

I did run through numerous Volvo's with the girl and we drove a few as well but her heart really wasn't in any of them although she did like the C30 but it was out of her price range, I later found that she was looking at Volvo's to make me happy so I backed off and she ended up with what she got.

She is however hassling me to put the HP 740 on club reg so SHE can drive it a bit and as she is a very apt pupil as a learner (She shuffles the wheel like a Pro!) id be happy to let her take it to work a few times.

Good question, the service doco says they were all replaced 23 k ago when the timing belt etc was done and theres plugs charged on the invoice.

Are they a pain to get to?

One of the 2 local dealers will get the maintenance work, I dont know what the local Ford/Mitsubishi/Honda dealer is like apart from being busy but I have dealt with the Hyundai/Nissan Dealer with Roadworthies and general service and they used to be a Jag/Merc/Volvo dealer workshop who still have service work from days of Yore (When the V40 was in for RWC they had an E Type in for tune) so Id think Edneys will get the work.
