DanG Hi All, I did a search on this & saw most issues are related to the electric liftgate, I have a 2010 XC 60 and the lifgate is intermittently lifting the rear not 100% sure what it could be so I started with the basics: - Checked the micro switch, drive release and key all work intermittently - I can hear the hydrulic pump working all times - Can't see any oil leaks in the system even took the boot panel off - Liftgate will raise randomly, If I catch the door in time it will lift with a little bit of support Do these liftgates need to be serviced & replaced with oil, can only think there is air in the system which might be causing this otherwise would only start replacing parts randomly after some help on the below: 1) Is there a service manual on how to replace the Hydraulic fluid checked a few workshop manuals and couldn't find any 2) What type of Hydrulic oil should be used assume it will be the same as the V70/XC90 3) Any suggestions to do some trouble shooting would be great. Cheers Daniel
jonbot i recall seeing issues with this from memory it was a case of "if tailgate doesnt fully raise in x seconds, replace everything", i dont recall the hydraulic system being serviceable to any great extent this was a while ago though
jonbot so was the one i played with, just didnt go all the way up, stopped in random places cheaper option was place the hydro thing in the bin and buy a normal LH strut. reliable, if nothing else
DanG I suppose if my engine failed i could throw it in the bin and replace it with a wind sail as well :)
jonbot well, yeah im not saying you would convert it to a non power setup, just that it is possible, if you dont want to spend a couple of grand fixing it
Polestar Seen this alot in the workplace and believe it or not its a relatively cheap fix. The left strut is the hydraulic ram that is assisted by the standard gas strut on the right. As the right gas strut weakens the hydraulic system struggles, replace just the gas strut and she be right. The hydraulic system uses the Volvo pas fluid as i remember and is self bleeding. Hope this helps.
delorean_mine DanG Thanks polestar Great help I'll give this a shot.Hey DanG, I have the same model and year with the hydraulic tailgate lag. Did the right gas strut replacement help at all?Thanks,-Nic

The hydraulic pump draws a lot of Juice after a new battery the issue stopped. It was months after I replaced the hydraulic system I did the battery and boom worked perfectly.
