Hey guys,
I have a Volvo 740 Turbo with a rebuilt td05-12b turbo. I installed the turbo today and went for a test drive.
Around 15 mins into the test drive, i realised there was a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust . Then 5 minutes later, the "low oil pressure" light came on. Does that mean i need a new oil pump? I do not know what to do now... Please help!

It's unlikely there's anything wrong with the oil pump.
1. Check the oil level on the dipstick, it'll be very low.
2. Top up the oil and start the car, the oil pressure light should now be off.
3. To cause the smoke, there must be an oil leak either into the intake system, or directly into the exhaust system, remove a spark plug and see if it's oil soaked. If it is, the oil is going into the intake system, if it isn't, it's going into the exhaust. You can also remove a section of the intake ducting to see if it's going into the intake, a small amount of oil in the ducting is normal though.
4. Either way, it sounds like one of the seals in the new turbo is faulty, incorrectly installed, or missing entirely. Does it have a warranty?

You forgot the other factors... Oil return pipe, oil feed, banjo fittings.

^ Check to see if the smoke is coming out the end of your exhaust (i.e. the smoke is being created somewhere inside the engine) or if it's just coming off the outside of the exhaust (i.e. something is leaking oil onto the outside of the exhaust pipe, which then heats it up and causes it to smoke). If the latter you should get smoke coming from under the bonnet also.

One might conclude your refurbed turbo pumped a few litres of engine oil into the exhaust pipe and Cat.
Oh dear, someone did not do the turbo shaft seals correctly.

The smoke came out when i was stationary at the lights. When i started driving the smoke went away. The low oil pressure light came on around 10 minutes after i saw smoke coming out of the exhaust. When i got home, i checked the oil level on the dipstick and it was normal.
The next day, i started the car again and went for a drive around the block. There was no smoke and the low oil pressure did not come on. The car felt normal. I am very confused

Well hopefully it was simply burning off of excess lube from the turbo rebuilt - and not a sign of a leaking seal.
However low oil pressure has to be watched, as it can mean its escaping somewhere hence the pressure sensor/sender also telling you this.
The steel exhaust pipe length has to get hot enough to actually turn liquid oil into smoke. Driving around the block wont achieve this. Sitting stationary on fast idle for half an hour should get the pipe temp up and your blood pressure in anticipation.

The original post stated that the smoke was coming out of the exhaust, faults with the oil feed and return system to the turbo will not cause smoke to come out of the exhaust, except for a blocked return line perhaps, in which case point 3. still applies.
I took smoke coming out the exhaust to mean smoke coming from the tailpipe.

I took it as external to the exhaust smoking.

I also have this issue with a rebuilt 18t I put onto a B23ET. It used to smoke a bunch on idle but now only seems to smoke on over run down hills. The oil feed I have is not the correct size and could possibly be putting excessive oil into the bearings. I have a 4an line here i need to put together and am hoping that sorts it.

I forgot to mention the td05-12b turbo in my 740 has been rebuilt to a high flow turbo. It's a 16g now. Can this effect oil pressure and smoke coming of the exhaust pipe?

depends oquality of workmanship.
though as i mentioned in the vega thread, check all clamps and lines.
Angus242164
Can you clarify exactly where the smoke is coming from?

The smoke came out of the tailpipe. Thank you

Any verdict on the clamps on the chra?

The clamps are fine. I took it to the mechanic this morning to make sure everything is 100%. The mechanic said the car is fine. The mechanic thinks a bit of oil in the turbo caused the blue smoke. This afternoon, I changed the oil and filter and went for a 30 minute and the car felt good. Looks like the previous owner didn't change the oil in a very long time. There was no smoke and the oil pressure light didn't come on. Hopefully it stays this way...
