Just a question what are those two clear tubes on both sides inside my trunk they go top to bottom
VolvoHordz
There is a cavity which has vents between the boot lid and rear window. The tubes drain water from this cavity down to the underside of the car.

Ahh ok thank you and also does that grill drain in front of windscreen run down to sills at the bottom of the door and this can be the potential rust problem
perko
yes the grill drains to just in front of the doors from memory, i guess if it's blocked somewhere there it might be causing rust but could also be water leaking in around the windscreen surround depending on where the rust is.
also a quick tip about titles, the more descriptive the title of your thread is, the more likely you are to get people looking at it that know about the subject, e.g. "244 boot tubes - what are they?" means that those of us know what these tubes are will be more likely to click into it. Not trying to have a go at ya, just trying to help everyone out

The windscreens (particularly the front) usually allow water in. And that causes rust at the bottom corners of the windscreen. I was listening to the radio on a trip from VIC to NSW a couple of years ago. Some guy was talking about tips to look after cars... He said that after washing his cars, he uses a blower vac to blast out any hidden water. I bought a cheap one from Bunnings - and I walk around the car, blow around trim strips, mirrors, tail lights, windscreen, boot rubber, etc. He basically said it's how he prevents rust. i.e. Completely prevents hidden water from sitting for any period of time.
(Overkill? Well, I've lost two excellent 70s 244s to rust - I don't intend on making it three.)
BTW... We were forced to park our 1986 240 outside for a few months. Although it was still washed regularly, and the blower had been used before that time (blasting out no dirt, etc. from under the chrome strips)... leaves were dropping on the car. When we returned to washing and garaging it, the blower was now blowing dirt out - rotted leaves - from behind the chrome trim down the sides - that had not been washing out with the hose! It took 3/4 washes before dirt stopped coming out.

Once a year I get the high pressure washer out and hit all the trim from varying directions until they stop shedding debris. It's incredible how much biological matter gets in there and retains moisture as it decays.
I don't have a garage, so I get a huge amount of compost out of all the trim and it gets rained on quite a bit so it stays damp all winter.

My 1982 244gl has perfect paint outside but it spent seven yrs of 33yrs in a garage near the beach and I have noticed I have little surface rust on rain gutter and under bonnet mainly near bonnet hinges is this normal its on surface
familyman
Our 1978 had only surface rust in the gutters. It ran out of rego, we moved near the beach. It sat outside. Two years later it was nearly eaten right through. Hinges not sure. But I'd probably hit it with polish, get most of the rust off, wax, do it every so often so the water runs off. I was never interested in cars much until owning Volvos. So if you like your 240, get rid of the rust while it's easy to, I say. Either that, or see the first one that comes up for sale with no rust as an investment - and keep that one rust-free. (That's what I did.)

I used POR15 when repainting my 244 to deal the surrounds from moisture.
