Can anybody please send me a pic of a flame trap casing the black part a the spot it in the engine bay cause I can't find it

Follow the hose up from the breather box under the intake manifold. On your 82 it'll be hidden under the intake manifold and tucked in behind the fuel distributor. iPd sells a relocation kit that brings it up between cylinders 3&4 on the intake manifold and makes is much less of a bastard to check and change. You could do the same thing with some appropriately sized transmission cooler hose (oil rated rubber).

I took the manifold off to get to it, but I replaced the breather box and fitted the relocation kit while I was in there.

Is it necessary to put on a fresh intake manifold gasket? I want to check the flame trap on mine but I don't have a spare gasket.

You can get to it without pulling the manifold, but it's a bitch of a spot.
One thing I like about pre 1980 models is the location of the flame trap.....

That depends. If you can get the manifold off with the gasket in one piece then probably not, but if it has never been off the likelihood of getting away with that is not good. You can take off the bellows under the manifold to make it easier to get at and with some loooooong nose pliers and slim fingers get in there.

If it's never been done or replaced then absolutely. Get a new o-ring for it before you do though.
I didn't bother with the remove & clean. At 500,000k I just treated it to a new one. It was cheap enough as I tacked it on an order for other stuff from FCP at some point.

I've tried a number of solvents for cleaning the flame trap to see what works best (same grunge you'll find in the oil trap), and I'd say go to Bunnies and buy 4L of Shellite. That was the best for oil residue grunge without resorting to a mix of Toluene & Methanol.

If you're talking the blue car then being as it's a 740t engine there's no flame trap, just the oil separator. It'd be worth replacing it as I didn't & they do clog up.
